Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*HAIRCUTS will be offered every Monday by appointment between 12:30 and 2 pm. Cost is $12 for women and $10 for men. Call 270-4310.

*COMMISSION ON AGING will not meet in July or August.

Day Trips

*CRUISING CALMLY ALONG! to Holyoke Heritage State Park, lunch a the elegant Delaney House, and cruise along the Connecticut River on The Lady Bea between the Holyoke Dam and Northampton. Depart at 8 am on Wednesday, August 6; $73 per person.

*24th Annual STATEWIDE SENIOR OUTING at Holiday Hill in Cheshire, on Monday, August 25, from 9 am to 4 pm; bus will depart at 8:30 am; $25 per ticket. All day food and ice cream, entertainment, three pools, bocce, hayrides, and horseshoes.

*See the Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, at WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE on Wednesday, September 3. Depart at 9 am; $76 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week Of

July 28–August 1

Monday: Beer batter fish with tartar sauce, buttermilk biscuit or sliced turkey sandwich on sandwich roll with cranberry sauce, tater tots with ketchup, California blend vegetables, apricot halves.

Tuesday: Cream of broccoli soup with crackers, grilled chicken Caesar salad with croutons and Caesar dressing, soft breadstick banana cream pie.

Wednesday: Hamburger on a roll, ketchup, lettuce and tomato, potato salad, pickle, ice cream cup.

Thursday: Chicken divan served over rice, diced carrots, potato bread, pineapple juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, August 4: Tomato soup, cold cut grinder with ham, turkey, and cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, three-bean salad, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday, August 5:  Swiss steak, noodles with gravy, diced carrots, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.
