Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*A family-style summer luncheon at VILLA BIANCA in Seymour will be Wednesday, August 4. Visit the tropics, with live Hawaiian music and hula dancers. Depart at 11 am; cost is $29.95. It is limited to 12 people.

Upcoming Programs

*Come learn about healthy indoor grilling of fruits and vegetables with Judy Prager, senior nutrition services dietician, on Tuesday, August 10, at 1:30 pm. Food samples, recipes, and raffle prizes! Call for reservations, 203-270-4310; seating is limited.

 

Day Trips

*Hunter Mountain GERMAN ALPS FESTIVAL — an Oktoberfest on Saturday, August 14 — German music, strolling musicians, great shows, craft vendors, polkas, outdoor biergarten. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $54.

*Jump aboard the Millennium, a 400-passenger catamaran, for a narrated cruise of ten lighthouses along with a Newport, R.I., Harbor tour Monday, August 16, departing at 7 am. Cost is $90.

*Enjoy an elegant lunch at the famous Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Mass., visit the Crane Museum of Papermaking, and taste seven different wines at Furnace Brook Winery on Wednesday, October 13. Depart at 7:15, ETA at 6 pm in Newtown. Cost is $74 based on 40–52 people.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise, pinochle, movie.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle; PM iris card folding craft class, Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting, pinochle.

Menu For Week Of

August 2–6

Monday: Oven friend chicken, sweet potato fries with ketchup, coleslaw vinaigrette, oat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Tomato basil soup with crackers, turkey salad on croissant, three-bean salad on a bed of lettuce, fruit cocktail.

Wednesday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, bowtie noodles, winter blend vegetables, herbed breadstick, pineapple juice, canned peaches.

Thursday: Roast beef with gravy, smashed potato, diced carrots, whole wheat bread, chocolate brownie.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, August 9: Cheeseburger on a wheat roll with lettuce, tomato and ketchup, baked beans, pickles, apple juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday, August 10: Crab cake with tarter sauce and lemon, orzo pilaf, chopped spinach, wheat dinner roll, butterscotch pudding with whipped topping.
