Tickets are on sale and now the cast is official for the next production by Town Players of Newtown.

The local community theater will stage Edward Albee’s searing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? weekends, September 10-October 5.

The classic American drama, first staged in October 1962, examines the complexities of the marriage of middle-aged George, an associate professor of history, and his wife Martha, the daughter of the president of the college where George teaches.

After the couple returns home late one evening from a faculty party, Martha reveals she has invited a young married couple she met at the party, Nick and Honey, over for a drink.

As the alcohol flows, Martha and George engage in scathing verbal abuse of each other in front of Nick and Honey. Although the interactions embarrass the younger couple, they decide to stay, and are inexorably drawn into Martha and George’s bitter and frustrated relationship.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won both the 1963 Tony Award and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. It has been frequently revived on the modern stage, notably in an acclaimed 2005 Broadway production featuring revisions by playwright Edward Albee, which is the version Town Players of Newtown will present.

Aaron Kaplan and Erica Lynne Evelti have been cast as George and Martha, while Amy Strachan and Andrew Blanchard will play Honey and Nick for Town Players. The production is being directed by Rich Mancini.

Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 2.

The September 21 performance is a benefit event; details about tickets for that show will be announced through the organization hosting that afternoon’s matinee.

Tickets for all other shows are $30. Senior citizens can purchase tickets online, and receive $5 cash back at the door. Visit newtownplayers.org for tickets and additional information.

Town Players productions are staged at The Little Theatre, 18 Orchard Hill Road.
