The host CT Hawks of Newtown won the two-day 12U Southwest Connecticut Fastpitch League Tournament at the Liberty Field Complex at Fairfield Hills on July 26 and 27. The No. 5 seed Hawks edged the top-seeded Pomperuag Panthers from Southbury 13-12 on Edie Franse’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Emily Murphy pitched a complete game and got the win. This matchup was tied at 12 going into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Verona Lynn hit a double to left field to get in scoring position, Lyla Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to move Lynn to third, and Franse hit a two-out single to center field to score the deciding run. The Hawks got three hits by CeCe Wasley, a double by Teagan McMurdo, and triple off the bat of Verona Lynn.

The Hawks had to overcome a lot to come out on top.

“We came into the tournament with a very low seed due to some close loses in the season. We had to battle hard through three games on Saturday to advance to the Championship game,” Head Coach Heather Franse said.

In the pinnacle game the Hawks fell behind but battled back.

“We had a moment in the championship where Pomperaug got on a run and scored six in one inning. I told the girls that this was what championship games are all about and they had to decide if they were willing to fight for it and they did just that,” Coach Franse said. “I am so proud of this team for persevering through all the ups and downs of the season to get to this league victory. Moments like this build kids’ confidence and create wonderful memories.”

Results of the first three tourney wins:

CT Hawks 13, Monroe Panthers 5: Singles by Bella Hussain, Lyla Wilson, and Emma Skura; triple by Edie Franse; complete game pitched by Lillian Grossman.

CT Hawks 9, Pomperaug Panthers 5: Emily Murphy pitched a one-hitter; Jane Anderson had a triple; and Edie Franse collected three hits including a double.

CT Hawks 17, Danbury Storm 9: The Hawks racked up 18 hits; Julia Jolly, Teagan McMurdo, and Verona Lynn all had multiple hits; Lillian Grossman had a stellar outing in the pitcher’s circle.
