GOP Registrar Resigns

Shirley Lawrenson, Republican registrar of voters since 1994, has submitted

her resignation to Town Clerk Cindy Curtis Simon.

Mrs Lawrenson said that her husband, Don Lawrenson, retired last December 31,

and since then "we have been changing our lifestyle."

"I have realized that our time together is important to me, and I would like

to spend more time sharing our `new' life with the flexibility of being able

to do anything or go anywhere at any time we so desire," she said.

Mrs Lawrenson's resignation will be effective at the end of the working day on

Monday, August 31. She will be succeeded by Karen Aurelia, the Republican

deputy registrar of voters, who has worked in the registrars' office for the

past three years.

Mrs Lawrenson began working in the registrars' office in 1992. She became the

Republican registrar of voters upon the death of Dona da Mota in 1994 and was

elected to a four-year term in 1996.
