Fallon Wins PGA Junior Title
SIMSBURY - Just two weeks after becoming the youngest golfer to qualify in the
Connecticut State Golf Association's (CSGA) junior championship, Tommy Fallon,
14, has taken home a title.
Fallon, who will enter his sophomore year at Newtown High School in the fall,
shot a pair of 80s at Simsbury Farms to win the Connecticut Junior PGA
championship in the 14-/15-year-old age division.
He also finished sixth overall amond 139 players competing in the 14- through
17-year-old age division.
Golfers came from Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and New York to compete.
In other golfing news:
l Newtown Country Club professional Paul Miller finished well off the pace in
the Connecticut State Open at Woodway Country Club in Darien.
Miller, the first-year PGA pro at NCC, qualified for the 61st State Open with
a 75 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Miller shot an 81 in the morning round and 72
in the afternoon round to finish the 54-hole event 15 strokes over par and 25
strokes behind champion Jim Gentile of Seawane Country Club in Long Island.
Fran Marrello of Heritage Village in Southbury shot a 73 during his Tuesday
round, then finished with a 71 and 75 on Wednesday to come in sixth.
Tony Kelley of Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke, Mass., was low man after the
qualifying round with a 69. Defending champ Kevin Giancola of New Britain was
second, behind by one stroke.
l David Hufner of Newtown has been entered in the USGA Amateur Qualifying
Tournament at Ellington Ridge Country Club, which will take place August 7.
Almost 90 players will shoot for the five spots available in the championship
at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island.
