Slo-Pitch-All-Star-Game
Full Text:
Sunday, September 10, is the date this year for the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball
League's Second Annual Bonnie DeCarlo All-Star Classic.
The contest was developed last fall as a memorial for Mrs DeCarlo, the late
wife of former league president, and long-time coach, Tony DeCarlo, who died
of cancer in the winter of 1993.
George Lockwood, coach of Catering By George in the 'A' Division, will coach
this year's 'A' Division All-Star squad as it looks to make it two-in-a-row.
The 'A' team won the First Annual contest 13-5 after the 'B' stars took the
early lead and held on for five innings before relinquishing.
Highlights from the 1994 game included the Classic's first-ever home run hit
by long-time all-star, Rick Matern. Jeff Wyatt and Rick Mariani both went
4-for-4 in the game for the winners with Wyatt copping the game's first MVP
honors. Jeff Wyatt (.516, 8 HR) and Tom Wyatt (.589, 15 HR) of newly crowned
'A' Division champion Gervais Bros will start for this year's 'A' stars along
with Doug Otton (.471) and Scott Terrill (.522) of Catering By George; Mark
Burroughs and Jim Tolster of R&R Foundations; league-batting champion Doug
Rose (.633) and Kevin Booker (.418, 20 RBI) of Western Connecticut Federal
Credit Union; and Dave Kingsley (.558) and Gary Andrews (.473, 7 HR) of
Newtown Exxon.
Rounding out the list of 'A' Division All-Stars will be Matt Daly, Chris Daly,
Gino LoRicco, Chris Dennis, Bob Kick, Rick Kasbarian, George Matern, Dave
Green, and Andy Shpunt.
The 1995 DeCarlo Classic is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm at Dickinson Park.
The game will follow this year's 'B' Division championship between My Place
Pizzeria and the 9 am winner of Apex Glass and Steve's Liquor.
The 'B' Division team, coached by Larry Rice of Steve's Liquor and John
O'Grady of Tilford Piano Movers, consists of two players from each of the
division's nine teams.
Representing defending-champion Steve's Liquor, who will be vying for a
second-straight league crown earlier that morning, will be league-batting
champion, Jim Chappius (.569) and Bob Jerolman (.480).
The rest of the 'B' Division All-Star team includes Jim Bardelli (.483, 20
RBI) and Mike Marshall (.460, 3 HR, 21 RBI) of J&M Construction; Rich Frampton
(.482) and John Spremullo of C&S Septic; Jim Reilly (.537, 5 HR) and Matt Gee
(.500, 17 RBI) of ATP Landscaping; Dave French (.525, 5 HR, 30 RBI) and Glen
Dean of Tilford's; Rich Stook (.509) and John Daniels (.507) of Apex Glass;
Scott Hurd (.564, 8 HR, 32 RBI) and Billy Girard (.500) of Hurd Construction;
Leo Spinelli (.560) and Rich Treadwell (.446, 4 HR, 27 RBI) of My Place Pizza;
and Rick Wood (.511) and Dom Salvatore (.411, 18 RBI) of Newtown Septic.
