WINE WISDOM: White Wines For Summertime Sippin'

By Steve Small

As the weather warms up, I find myself drinking more and more white wines.

Some people will only drink one type of wine. They know what they like and

stick with it. Because I get a chance to taste so many wines, I am always

interested in trying different wines. It just happens that the red wines take

a back seat in the warmer weather.

Chardonnay is the most popular white wine by far. Some jaded wine snobs have

begun to turn up their noses at Chardonnay. They have formed the unofficial

ABC Club, standing for Anything But Chardonnay. I think maybe they just

haven't been drinking the right Chardonnays.

Common flavors found in Chardonnay include citrus, butter and tropical fruits.

Many Chardonnays are aged in oak barrels which imparts a distinctive woody

flavor to the wine. Some tasty California Chardonnays I have recently tasted

include Stevenot, Beckmen and Quail Creek. These wines are medium-bodied,

flavorful, and sell for between $10 and $15.

If you do not like Chardonnay, there is still a huge number of delicious white

wines available for summertime sipping. Sauvignon Blanc is usually lighter

than Chardonnay and less expensive. Geyser Peak, Concannon and Columbia Crest

all make delicious Sauvignon Blancs that sell for under $10 a bottle.

French White Bordeaux is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that is

generally light, dry, and an easy quaffing wine.

Pinot Grigio has also become enormously popular over the last couple of years.

Most of the under $10-a-bottle Pinot Grigio is light to medium-bodied, dry and

soft. It is an excellent match with cream sauces and chicken or fish. I just

tasted a Pinot Gris from an Alsatian wine cooperative that had a lot of flavor

at a reasonable price. Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are the same grape.

I have just mentioned the most popular white wine varieties. There are many,

many more varieties that also provide tasty warm weather sipping. Whatever

your choice may be, now is the time to pull up a lawn chair and pull the cork

on your favorite bottle of white wine.
