Huntingtown Road Fire

Miles Springer of 163 Huntingtown Road awoke about 1 am on July 8 and smelled

smoke, opened his basement door and found the basement on fire, according to

Fire Marshal George Lockwood. Mr Springer, who wasn't injured in the fire,

called firefighters from a neighbor's house. The fire caused an estimated

$52,000 in damage, Mr Lockwood said. The blaze heavily damaged a prize-winning

antique Ford Thunderbird parked in the basement garage, the basement's

contents, wiring, plumbing and a ceiling. Mr Lockwood said the fire originated

in a riding lawn mower parked in the basement. The mower's battery shorted out

and ignited gasoline in the mower's gas tank, he said. Bee Photo, Clark
