George E. Haas

George E. Haas, 77, the father of Kaaren Valenta of Newtown, died April 29 in

Sarasota (Fla) Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary H. (Phillips)

Haas of Bradenton, Fla.

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in petroleum

engineering, Mr Haas was a retired employee of the Sun Oil Company.

He served in the Army Air Force in World War II and was the recipient of two

Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals and two Presidential Unit

Citations.

Mr Haas was a 32nd degree Mason, York Rite, and a past grand master. He was a

former chairman and longtime member of the Michigan Oil & Gas Council.

Mr Haas also is survived by another daughter, Eileen Linde, of Oak Park, Ill.,

four grandchildren: Jason Valenta of Sandy Hook, Caroline Valenta of

Carbondale, Colo., and Sasha and Karina Linde of Oak Park, and by a sister,

Dorothy Peoples of Bradenton, Fla.

A memorial service will be held in Bradenton. Interment will be in Arlington

National Cemetery.

Thomas O. Thorsen

Thomas Oliver Thorsen, 67, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and Center Harbor,

N.H., died of cancer on May 11 at his home in Florida.

He was the father of Kathryn Cunningham of Sandy Hook.

Born in Milan, Minn., he graduated from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn. in

1953 and served in the Medical Corps for the US Army from 1953 to 1955. Mr

Thorsen was the former senior vice president and chief financial officer of

General Electric. During his 31-year career with GE, he served as vice

president and comptroller and held other key management positions. After

retiring from GE in 1984, Mr Thorsen served as vice chairman and chief

financial officer for the Travelers Corporation, retiring from there in 1992.

In addition to his daughter, Mr Thorsen is survived by his wife of 47 years,

Carolyn (Klepfer) Thorsen; his 94-year-old mother, Annie Thorsen of Milan,

Minn.; his four children, Elaine Cannady of Trophy Club, Tex, David Thorsen of

Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Ellen Thorsen of Frankfort, Ky.; three

grandchildren, Scott Cannady of Texas, Ashley Cannady of Texas, and Makena

Cunningham of Connecticut; and one brother, Howard B. Thorsen of Alexandria,

Va.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ray Strand at Anderson Funeral Home,

Montevideo, Minn. Funeral services were held at Kviteseid Lutheran Church,

Milan, Minn. with interment following at Kviteseid Lutheran Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Mr Thorsen may be made to The Cancer Research Fund

of Damon Runyan Walter Winchell Foundation, 675 Third Avenue, 25th Floor, New

York, NY 10017.

Jacalyn Harmon

Jacalyn Harmon, 61, of Rock Ridge Road, Southbury, died May 12 at her home.

Miss Harmon was born in Cambridge, Mass., on August 31, 1937, a daughter of

the late Henry S. and Iva (Caswell) Harmon. She was a graduate of Bridgewater

State College and earned a master's degree from Boston University. A resident

of Southbury the past 20 years, she was employed as a vocational

rehabilitation therapist by the State of Connecticut at the Greater Bridgeport

Mental Health Center and previously at Fairfield Hills Hospital, Newtown.

She is survived by a brother, Henry C. Harmon of Kemang, Jakarta, Indonesia; a

close friend, Patricia Papcin of Southbury; and a loving extended family.

Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation, 2320 Bath Street,

Santa Barbara, CA 93105.

Arrangements were by Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.

Edward J. Hoffman

Edward J. Hoffman, 76, a lifelong Bridgeport resident, died May 10 in Danbury

Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jean M. (Gasso) Hoffman.

He was the father of Denise K. Lovett of Newtown.

Mr Hoffman was a retired Bridgeport firefighter and a veteran of the US Air

Force.

In addition to his daughter he is survived by a brother, William Foster of

Massachusetts, and two granddaughters, Nora Kate Heuer and Sara Lovett.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Redgate Hennessy Funeral Home, Trumbull.

Pamela E. Reilly

Pamela E. Reilly, 51, wife of Wallace B. Reilly of Rowledge Pond Road,

Newtown, died May 9 at her home.

She was the mother of Wallace Reilly of Newtown.

She was born in Bridgeport, July 19, 1947, daughter of Mildred (Forstrum)

Plumb of Shelton and the late William Plumb.

A resident of Newtown for 25 years, she was employed as a secretary for

Hubbell Plastics, Inc of Newtown.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements

are by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.

Henry S. Popowski

Henry (Hank) S. Popowski, Sr, 82, of Trumbull, husband of Nellie (Butski)

Popowski for 57 years, died May 6 in St Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport.

He was the father of Henry S. Popowski, Jr, of Newtown.

Born in Ansonia on December 9, 1917, he was a resident of Trumbull for 43

years.

He was a retired divisional supervisor for Atlantic Richfield, formerly

Anaconda American Brass, Ansonia Division for 39 years. He was a founding

member of Tashua Knolls Senior Men's Club, Trumbull, a former member of the

Connecticut State Police Auxiliary, Westport Barracks, a founding member of St

Catherine of Siena Parish, Nichols, and a former usher for six years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and son, include a daughter, Janet L.

Csontos of Bridgeport; five grandchildren, Michael J. Csontos, Jr, of Shelton,

Cynthia M. Csontos of New York City, Cristina D. Popowski, Alan J. and Brian

M. Popowski, all of Newtown; a brother, Joseph Popowski of Cape Coral, Fla.;

and a sister, Helen Nagy of Shelton. He was predeceased by two brothers,

Walter and Charles Popowski; two sisters, Estelle Konner and Eleanor

Drozdowski; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on May 10 in the Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral

Home, 399 White Plains Road, and in St Catherine of Siena Church. Interment

was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Elizabeth F. Hurd

Elizabeth F. Hurd, 93, of Newtown, died May 10 in Ashlar of Newtown. Born in

Monroe, she has been a Newtown resident for the past 20 years.

She was the aunt of Carol J. Platt of Newtown.

Miss Hurd was a member of the Lady Martha Chapter 103, Episcopal Church

Women's Auxiliary, and the Monroe Historical Society.

In addition to her niece, she is survived by several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 13 in the Redgate, Wilmot, West and Goulding

Funeral Home, 406 Main Street, Monroe. Interment was in Monroe Center

Cemetery.

Robert E. Pratt

Robert E. Pratt, 84, a Wingdale, N.Y. resident, died May 7 in New Milford.

He was the father of Ruth Ann McCrodden of Newtown.

Mr Pratt had lived in Wingdale since 1984. He was married to Gladys E. Pratt,

who died in July 1998.

He worked as a New York state parks maintenance employee for the Taconic State

Park Commission. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Peale Center in

Pawling as a prayer partner. He was also an avid tinsmith. He was a veteran of

World War II, serving with the Army medical Corps as a staff sergeant

stationed in the South Pacific.

Mr Pratt was a member of the Valley Bible Fellowship Church in Poughquag, N.Y.

He was born in New York, N.Y. on March 3, 1915 to Reuben and Pauline Pratt.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by a sister, Audrey Teter of

Wycoff, N.J.; a brother, Oliver A. Pratt, Cresskill, N.J.; three sons, Robert

A. Pratt of Rockville Center, N.Y., David Pratt of Hopewell Junction and

Stuart Pratt of Carmel; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be on Friday, May 14, at 10:30 am at the Valley Bible

Fellowship Church in Poughquag, N.Y. For information, please call 226-8793 or

Church Benevolent Fund, PO Box 213, Poughquag, N.Y. 12570, or a charity of

Robert Joyce Memorial Service

A Memorial Service for Robert W. Joyce, 65, of Boynton Beach, Fla. and

Brookfield, who died September 29, 1998 in Delray Medical Center, Delray

Beach, Fla., will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 15 at the Brookfield

Congregational Church, Route 25, Brookfield. Burial will follow in Stepney

Cemetery in Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of your

choice in Mr Joyce's memory.

Evelyn E. Dyke

Evelyn E. Dyke, 62, wife of Richard Dyke of 104 Glen Road, Sandy Hook, died

May 8 at her home.

Mrs Dyke was born in Derby, April 22, 1937, a daughter of the late Alvor and

Grace (Hill) Heglund. She was a lifelong resident of Sandy Hook and for many

years assisted her mother in the operation of the Sandy Hook Diner. She was a

member of the Newtown United Methodist Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs Dyke is survived by three sons, William and Frank of

Sandy Hook and Richard A. of Mooresville, N.C.; two daughters, Sharon Zinn of

Southbury and Jacqueline Dyke of Middletown; a sister, Marjorie Tardiff of

Bethel; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service was held May 11 at 2 pm at Zoar Cemetery, Sandy Hook.

Arrangements were by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.

Pauline T. Llodra

Pauline T. Llodra, 90, of Bridgeport, widow of the late Marinano "Mike"

Llodra, died May 5 at Astoria Park.

She was the mother of Robert M. Llodra of Sandy Hook.

Born in Bridgeport, she was a lifelong resident, and was a retired employee of

Apex Tool.

In addition to her son, she is survived by a daughter, P. Dolores Gonda of

Boca Raton, Fla.; three grandchildren, Michael R. Llodra, Sharon Llodra

Barrows, and Bethany Llodra; two great-grandchildren, Katherine and Julia

Barrows; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on May 8 in the Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road

in Fairfield Center. Interment followed at St Michael's Cemetery.

Carole L. Marsala

Carole Laurette (Champagne) Marsala, 53, of Carlson Drive, Milford, wife of

Joseph L. Marsala, Jr, and daughter of the late Joseph and Laurette (Gravel)

Champagne, died May 6 in her home after a long illness.

She was the sister of Serge Champagne of Newtown.

She was born on November 25, 1945 in Bridgeport and was a resident of Milford

for 29 years. Mrs Marsala was a courier of A.D.P. for 17 years.

In addition to her husband and sister, she is survived by a son, Joseph

Marsala, III, of Shelton; a daughter, Laurette Lenotti of Milford; three other

brothers, Claude Champagne of Milford, Roche Champagne of Southport, and Alain

Champagne of Stratford; a sister, Lola LePore of Stratford; mother-in-law and

father-in-law, Dorothy and Joseph Marsala, Sr, of Stratford; and several

nieces and nephews.

Services took place in the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the

Green, Milford. Committal was private.
