with cuts: Health Fair Feature Attractions For All Ages

Residents of all ages found attractions at the annual Newtown Health and

Public Safety Fair Saturday, September 14 at Newtown Middle School. Adults

seemed to gravitate toward the free testing stations and booths that offered

samples, while the children had a difficult time deciding which to visit first

- the ambulance, the fire trucks, the Jaws of Life demonstration, Life Star

helicopter, the booth where they could enter a contest for a mountain bike, or

the big alligator that handed out stickers promoting good oral hygiene.

"I think it was an enormous success," said Mae Schmidle, who chaired the event

along with Dr Della Schmidt and Health District Director Mark Cooper. "The

turn out was just excellent."

Christine Dignam this is correct of Bear Hill Road won the mountain bike

donated by Bethel Cycle & Fitness Shop. The winners of the poster contest were

Adam Calderone (first place), Eric Bagger (second), and Thomas Cruson (third).

Each youth was awarded a gift certificate from Dick Blick. Betty Bussmann of

the Women's Club was chair of the contest.

Civic organizations, local businesses, and government groups participated in

the event including Newtown Health District, Newtown Business and Professional

Women's Club, Newtown Ambulance Association, Ashlar of Newtown, the League of

Women Voters, Newtown Bee, American Red Corss, State Rep. Julia Wasserman,

First Selectman Bob Cascella, the Newtown Neighborhood Association, Dr Henry

Gellert, the Natural Merchant, Colonial Chiropractic Centre, Dr Charles Ray,

the Family Health Center, WESCO Sports Center, Newtown Ambulance, Newtown

Emergency Medical Services, Bethel Cycle & Fitness, Newtown Fire companies,

Newtown Youth Services, US Health Care, Regional Hospice, Cell Tech, Almost

Family Day Care, Equinox International, Newtown Underwater Search & Rescue,

the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Dr Sal Abriola, and Mannatech. Dr Thomas Draper

was honorary chairman of the event.
