Grace Jones
Grace Jones, a former Newtown teacher and resident, died April 17 at Westerly
Hospital in Rhode Island after suffering a massive stroke. She was a long time
resident of Sandy Hook. She taught in the Newtown School System from
1955-1969, after which she retired. She was a strong advocate for introducing
the English Open classroom concept to Connecticut schools.
A gifted teacher, she graduated from Columbia Teacher's College in 1935 and
later earned two master's degrees in reading from Western Connecticut State
College. She first taught at an open-air school for consumptive children in
Brooklyn, where she was born and grew up.
On her retirement, she moved to Stonington and opened her bookstore, Battersea
Books on Water Street in Stonington, which she operated from 1976 until
recently. An amiable presence in Stonington with her dog Charley, she was a
true lover of books, children and dogs. Although burdened by the onset of
Alzheimer's in recent years, she never lost her joy of the poetry of flowers
and sunsets. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends and
customers, and by the community she loved and served so well.
Mrs Jones was the wife of the late Major Joseph R. Jones. She is survived by
one son, Richmond Jones of South Britain; a sister Katherine Pompilio of
Forestdale, Mass.; one grandson, Christopher Jones of San Jose, Calif.; a
grand-daughter, Hilary Jones of Vancouver, B.C.; several nieces and nephews,
and her beloved dog, Charley.
Private services were held. Burial was in Middletown Veterans Cemetery in
Middletown.
Donations in Mrs Jones memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 911
