OBIT (Jones; Mandulak; Quinn; Mihalek; Willard)

Grace Jones

Grace Jones, a former Newtown teacher and resident, died April 17 at Westerly

Hospital in Rhode Island after suffering a massive stroke. She was a long time

resident of Sandy Hook. She taught in the Newtown School System from

1955-1969, after which she retired. She was a strong advocate for introducing

the English Open classroom concept to Connecticut schools.

A gifted teacher, she graduated from Columbia Teacher's College in 1935 and

later earned two master's degrees in reading from Western Connecticut State

College. She first taught at an open-air school for consumptive children in

Brooklyn, where she was born and grew up.

On her retirement, she moved to Stonington and opened her bookstore, Battersea

Books on Water Street in Stonington, which she operated from 1976 until

recently. An amiable presence in Stonington with her dog Charley, she was a

true lover of books, children and dogs. Although burdened by the onset of

Alzheimer's in recent years, she never lost her joy of the poetry of flowers

and sunsets. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends and

customers, and by the community she loved and served so well.

Mrs Jones was the wife of the late Major Joseph R. Jones. She is survived by

one son, Richmond Jones of South Britain; a sister Katherine Pompilio of

Forestdale, Mass.; one grandson, Christopher Jones of San Jose, Calif.; a

grand-daughter, Hilary Jones of Vancouver, B.C.; several nieces and nephews,

and her beloved dog, Charley.

Private services were held. Burial was in Middletown Veterans Cemetery in

Middletown.

Donations in Mrs Jones memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 911

Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, R.I. 02920.

Margaret Mandulak

Margaret (Horvath) Mandulak, 86, died on April 15 at Ashlar of Newtown. She

was the beloved wife of the late Michael Mandulak.

She was the loving mother of two sons, Michael Mandulak and Robert J.

Mandulak, and devoted sister of Helen (Horvath) Mak. She is also survived by

four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were private.

Helen O'Brien Quinn

Helen (O'Brien) Quinn, born January 6, 1931, died April 13 in Alexandria, Va.

She was the wife of Robert H. Quinn, formerly of Newtown, who was the son of

Hugh and Jessie Quinn and brother of the late Hugh Quinn.

She was the sister-in-law of Dorothy Q. Cavanaugh of Newtown.

She is also survived by another sister-in-law, Catherine Q. Whyte of

Clearwater, Fla.; four children, Robert, Michael, Colleen and Kevin; and two

grandchildren, Sean and Thomas.

Services were held April 16 at the Belvoir Chapel at Fort Belvoir, Va.

Internment was in Mt Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, Va.

Vincent M. Mihalek

Vincent M. Mihalek, 70, of Bridgeport, formerly of Newtown, died April 18 in

St Vincent's Medical Center.

Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Matthew Mihalek and Ann

(Sarnik) Mihalek Roy. He was a graduate of Newtown High School where he was a

manager of the football, basketball and baseball teams. Mr Mihalek was retired

from Dresser Industries.

He is survived by one brother, Matthew Mihalek of Bridgeport; two aunts; one

uncle; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held on April 21, at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main

Street, Stratford, and in St Andrew's Church, Bridgeport, with a Mass of

Christian Burial. Interment was in St John's Cemetery, Stratford .

Robert W. Willard

Robert W. Willard, 75, of 11 Longview Road, Sandy Hook, died April 15 at

Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara (Simpson) Willard.

Mr Willard was born January 17, 1924 in Bridgeport, son of the late Harry and

Mary (Maloney) Willard. He was a 20 year US Army Veteran of World War II, the

Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring as a first sergeant with the Army

Signal Corps. In 1988 he retired as a traffic manager with the Harvey Hubble

Company of Newtown. He was a resident of Sandy Hook for 35 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Robert J. Willard of Bethel; three

daughters, Judith Forceir of Newbern, N.C., Kathleen Sniadecki of Bolivia,

N.C., and Susan Hirsch of Rochester, N.Y.; one sister, Mary Zambory of Tampa,

Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and

nephews.

Funeral services were held April 18 at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street

South, Southbury. Burial was private.
