This week in 1991
Having won its last two games by a 117-51 margin to improve to 8-10 on the
season, the Newtown High girls' basketball team was thinking upset when 18-1
New Fairfield came to town for the regular-season finale. In a battle that
featured two of the top players in the WCC, New Fairfield's Jen Rizzotti
outscored Newtown's Lynn Lattanzio 25-22 and led the Lady Rebels to a 70-48
win. Nadine Henchliffe scored ten points in the Newtown loss.
This week in 1986
Coach Paul Horton saw his Newtown High wrestling team crown a pair of
individual champions at the WCC finals when Scott Behan won the title in the
101-pound class and Brian Voland won at 108 pounds. Pat O'Connor (170) and
Kevin Lee (heavyweight) each finished runner up, Chad Turoczi and Matt Fansher
placed third, and Beau Rennert took fourth for Newtown.
This week in 1981
Immaculate High's Dave Osborne buried a desperation 20-footer with three
seconds on the clock as the Mustangs upset the NHS boys' basketball team 54-52
in the final game of the regular season. Osborne and Joe Rios combined for 37
Immaculate points while the Indians were led by Randy Gunther and Frank
Bolander who netted 15 points each. NHS senior Billy Wilkison, who scored a
career-high 32 points and ripped down his 500th career rebound two nights
earlier against Bethel, finished the night with six points.
This week in 1976
The Newtown High girls' basketball team finished the season with a 5-9 record
after defeating New Fairfield in the season's last game. Newtown was led by
the efforts of Donna Leavitt, Jane Whitney, Sue Leitner, and Cheryl Hensel.

Three members of the Newtown High boys' basketball team were selected for
post-season honors as they each finished in the Western Connecticut
Conference's Top Ten in scoring. Jim Glover, Bob McLaughlin, and Steve
Woodward finished seventh, eighth, and tenth in the conference, respectively.
Across town, meanwhile, Ray Shupenis - who would later coach boys' and girls'
basketball at the Newtown Middle School - was a part of a championship effort
as the Woodbury High basketball team captured its first-ever Berkshire League
title.
This week in 1961
Newtown High senior Rich Farrell scored 21 points and fell just four points
short of the team scoring title, as the Indians finished their regular season
with a 73-51 win over New Milford. Junior Ron Beardsley scored 13 points in
the victory to finish the season with a total of 250 points to Farrell's 246.
Farrell graduated with 386 points leaving him sixth on the school's all-time
scoring chart behind Ken Berglund, Ken Smith, Marv Shredders, Bob Kingman, and
Sonny Proudfoot.
This week in 1956
The Newtown High School boys' basketball team concluded its season with a
63-33 win over rival, Southbury. Dick Maye led Newtown with 17 points, Joe
Kealey added 15, Bob Ryan and Cliff Beers scored eight each, and Dick Seman
tallied seven. Newtown finished the season with a record of 6-9.
This week in 1951
The Newtown High girls' basketball team saw its seven-year winning streak come
to an end when, because of poor free-throw shooting, it fell 37-35 at home to
Bethel. Janet Berglund totalled 16 points and Pat McMahon scored 14, but
Newtown converted only five-of-thirteen from the charity stripe. It was the
first regular-season defeat for Newtown since the 1943-44 season, although the
team had suffered defeats in both the 1945 and 1947 league championship games.
This week in 1946
Newtown High captain Eddie Farrell scored eight points and Burr Morgan added
six as the team defeated New Milford 30-26 to rebound from a tough 34-33 loss
to Morris in which Hugh Quinn had given the locals the lead in the final
seconds only to see it all end on a half-court prayer shot moments before the
final whistle.
This week in 1941
" Lefty " Smith rolled a spare in the night's final frame as the Newtown Bees
defeated Morris & Shepard by an 830-826 margin in the Newtown Bowling League's
opening-night matchup. Bob Leahy rolled the night's best score of 120 while
Bud Naramore's 298 was the best three-game series of the evening. Bob Kelly
led Morris & Shepard in defeat.
This week in 1936
Karchenski scored 20 points and R. Leahy added ten, but the rest of Newtown
Athletic Club's nine-man cast could manage only another five points and the
team was defeated 45-35 by the Lutheran Red Terrors.
