OBITS (Pattison; Kirk; Carter; Grondal; Toll)

Robert Pattison

Robert Pattison, 96, of Sandy Hook, and formerly of New Britain, died October

18 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marion (Robb) Pattison.

Born in Port Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late John and Christina

(Cram) Pattison. He was a former long-time New Britain resident and a former

Plainville resident before moving to Sandy Hook one year ago. He was formerly

employed as a engineer at Fafnir Bearing Co. He was a member of the First

Church of Christ in New Britain, Martha Chapter #21, OES, and Friendship Lodge

#33, AF & AM (formerly Harmony Lodge).

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Carlson of

Sandy Hook, and Muryn and Clifford Hotchkiss of Plainville; four

grandchildren, Craig Carlson, Robin Kilson, Stephen Carlson and Carrie Warner,

and nine great-grandchildren, Megan Carlson, Jessica Warner, Bobby Carlson,

Mat Carlson, Kendra Kilson, Cassidy Carlson, Zachary Warner, Courtney Carlson,

and Hannah Kilson.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home,

411 South Main Street, New Britain on October 25, with a procession to leave

at 3 pm for Fairview Cemetery. Graveside services will follow, with the Rev.

Terry Wayne Pfeiffer, of the Newtown United Methodist Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the

charity of the donor's choice.

Annie T. Kirk

Annie T. Kirk, 90, of Stratford, mother of Frederick H. Kirk of Newtown, died

October 20 in the Lord Chamberlain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Schliersee, Germany, Mrs Kirk was a Stratford resident for over 56

years. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of

Stratford and the Germenia Schwaben Club. She was the wife of the late John

Kirk.

Survivors include two other sons, Conrad C. Kirk of Shelton and Herman P. Kirk

of Ansonia; a daughter, Regina A. Bannerman of Duxbury, Mass.; 11

grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on October 23 at 11 am in the Spear, Dennis &

D'Arcy Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford, with the Rev John W. Clarke

officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Friends

may call October 23 from 10 am to time of service.

Josephine P. Carter

Josephine P. Carter, 85, died on October 11 while on a visit to her son,

William, in Warner Robins, Georgia.

Born in New York City, for most of her life Mrs Carter resided in South

Orange, N.J. She and her husband retired to San Antonio, Tex. in 1978. In

December of 1997, Joseph Carter Jr, her husband of 62 years, died, and Mrs

Carter moved to Newtown to live with her son, Robert.

Mrs Carter was a loving mother of four sons. Her devotion to family and her

involvement in local South Orange and Maplewood educational and community

activities were among her most important interests over the years. She was

president of the Clinton School Parent Teachers Organization and founded a

special weekend teen canteen at the South Orange Community House in the late

1950s. This program, which provided local high school students with a much

needed social outlet, was a very innovative program for its time and continued

for many years.

Throughout her life, her major focus continued to be on her family and

especially her grandchildren. Her oldest son, Joseph III died in 1994.

In addition to her three sons, William, Robert and Richard, who resides in

Glendale, CA, Mrs Carter leaves behind 11 grandchildren and three great

granchildren.

Louis A. Grondal

Louis A. Grondal of Newtown died at his home on October 16 after a year-long

encounter with cancer.

Mr Grondal was the only son of Jean and Flore Grondal, born in Liege, Belgium,

on February 7, 1934. He received his education in Liege, and served in the

Belgian army as a paratrooper.

Louis developed a passion for airplanes as a child, and became a well known

European control line model airplane flyer, becoming world champion in the

acrobatic class in 1960 in Budapest and 1962 in Moscow. He also redesigned his

winning acrobatic model plane, which remains known as the "Grondal Nobler."

He moved to the United States with his trade as a tool and die maker in 1965,

and lived in Newtown since 1969. Over the last 20 years, he was employed at

Paper Machine Components in Danbury.

His passion for flying led him to the Nutmeg Soaring Association, where he

just recently began to participate in regional and national contests, winning

Region I in 1997, an placing will in two of this year's national contests. He

was also an avid skier and scuba diver and loved to cook. He was a loving

husband and best friend, father and friend to many.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne, as well as both parents. He was

married to Linda C. DeMarco on November 11, 1991. Besides his wife, he is

survived by a son, Daniel Grondal; a daughter, Myriam Grondal, both living in

Danbury, and two granddaughters in Southbury.

A Memorial Service will be held on a date to be announced. Hull Funeral

Service, 60 Division St., Danbury, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Nutmeg Soaring

Association Scholarship Fund, PO Box 585, Botsford, CT 06404; The New Milford

Hospital Oncology Center, 21 Elm St., New Milford, CT 06776; or to New Milford

Wolcott Toll

Wolcott "Will" Toll, 78, of Newtown, died October 16, in the Danbury hospital

after being struck by a motorist on Main Street, Newtown, in front of Edmond

Town Hall on Thursday evening.

Mr Toll was the husband of Susan (Kelly) Toll and resided at Pocono Road.

He was born in Denver, Colo., May 4, 1920 the son of the late Oliver W. and

Merle D. (Sampson) Toll. He was a graduate of the Landon School, Bethesda, Md.

and Yale University Class of 1942 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa,

Zeta Psi and the Berzelius Society. He spent the years between 1942 and 1945

working for the War Department on the Board of Economic Warfare in charge of

the Air Transportation Division in Brazil.

After working in the import/export business in New York City, he started his

own investment company in Newtown, where he has lived since 1950.

Mr Toll was an active member of the Newtown Rotary Club and was very involved

in the Rotary International effort "Polio Plus" to eradicate polio worldwide.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation. He was the

Newtown Rotary liaison to the Newtown Economic Development Commission. He was

a founding member of the Danbury Area Computer Society where he chaired

monthly meetings on the topic of finances.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Stephen of Los Altos,

CA, Michael of San Jose, Costa Rica, and Molly Toll-Reed of Brooklyn, N.Y.,

three brothers, John and David Toll of Maryland and Dan Toll of Chicago, a

sister, Anne Toll DUnham of California; and six grandchildren. He was

predeceased by his daughter, Catherine.

A memorial service will be held October 24 at 11 am in the Newtown

Congregational Church with Rev. Steven Gordon officiating. Cremation will take

place at Mountain Grove Crematory at the convenience of the family. There are

no calling hours.
