Matilda C. Payne

Matilda C. Payne, 84, formerly of Candlewood Park, Danbury, mother of John

Payne of Newtown, died December 21, in the Laurelwood Rehabilitation and

Skilled Nursing Center, Ridgefield, where she had been a resident the past

four years. She was the sister of Elizabeth Staples of Newtown.

Mrs Payne was born in New York City, March 11, 1914, a daughter of the late

John K. and Mathilde (Stelling) Ropke. She was a longtime resident of Long

Island where she was employed as a real estate agent. She then lived in

Candlewood Park for 20 years.

In addition to her son and sister, she is survived by two other sons, Franklin

Payne of Baldwin, L.I., and Jeffrey Payne of Deer Park, L.I.; five

grandchildren, Janice Stock, Charles Payne, Christine Payne, Cynthia Payne,

and Christopher Payne; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no

calling hours. Arrangements are by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street,

Newtown.

Sam Boles

Sam Boles, 79, of Norwalk, father of Bob Boles of Newtown, died December 20,

at home. Born in Toronto, Canada, May 15, 1919, he was the son of the late

Harry and Molly Boles and had been a Norwalk resident since 1945. He was the

husband of Lenore (Utal) Boles.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Army. He was a member of the

Jewish War Veteran's Malcolm Tarlov Post. He was a CPA and former partner in

the accounting firm of Boles and Trimboli.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by three other sons, Lanny

Boles of Trumbull, Larry Boles of Alexandria, Va., and Howard Schloss of

Norwalk; a daughter, Anne Boles of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Max Boles

of Massachusetts; a sister, Miri Colvin of New York, N.Y.; eight

grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on December 23 in Temple Beth El, 109 East Avenue,

Norwalk. Interment was in Beth El Memorial Park Cemetery, Richards Avenue,

Norwalk.

Eleanor Howell

Eleanor Cahill Howell, 72, of Peabody, Mass., sister of Jean Fadus of Newtown,

died in Salem, Mass., following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late

Robert L. Howell.

Born and educated in Danbury, she was the daughter of Arthur and Rose

(Prebhayla) Cahill. Mrs Howell was co-owner of the ERA Doll House, and, as a

young girl, she was a professional singer on several radio stations, including

the Terry O'Shea Show.

She leaves two sons, Robert L. Howell of Peachtree City, Ga., and Richard

Howell of Lynn, Mass.; three daughters, Robyn Nathan of West Peabody, Mass.,

Michele Arnone of Danvers, Mass., and Elizabeth Howell of Peabody, Mass.;

another sister, Marita Marchetti of Southington; six grandchildren; and

several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held December 22 in St Paul's Episcopal Church,

Peabody, Mass

Henry F. Young

Henry F. Young, 87, of Modesto, Calif., died at English Oaks Hospital on

December 12.

Mr Young lived in Newtown before he moved to Modesto, Calif.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Recently he was

recognized by the American Truck Historical Society for his involvement with

the early trucking industry in Connecticut.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Young of Modesto; six children,

Clifford Young of Shelton, Mildred Young of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Frances

Pat Kaufman of Las Vegas, Nev., Kathleen Parker of New Mexico, Michael Young

of Modesto, Calif., and Dr Thomas Young of Creston, Iowa.; 16 grandchildren;

and 13 great-grandchildren.

James W. Kerwin

James William Kerwin, 84, father of Michael Kerwin of Newtown, died on

December 20. He was the husband of the late Lillian Gordon Kerwin.

He was a lifelong Bridgeport resident and was a retired sergeant with the

Bridgeport Police Department, retiring in 1965 after 25 years. After

retirement he worked for the State Motor Vehicle Department for ten years and

then as a security guard for City Trust. He served in the Army during World

War II, stationed 38 months with his unit on Guadalcanal and Luzon. He was a

member of the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the

Miamogue Yacht Club.

He is survived by two other children, Nancy Wilkes of Trumbull and James

Kerwin Jr of California; seven grandchildren, James Drew and Cynthia Kerwin,

Jennifer and Michael Kerwin, Eddie, Erin and Cori Wilkes; and two

great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held December 23 in St. Augustine's Cathedral with a

Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with full military honors was in St

Michael's Cemetery.

James C. O'Toole

James C. O'Toole, 77, of 456-A Heritage Village, Southbury, father of Mary

Karen Merrill of Newtown, died December 18, at his home. He was the husband of

Frances (O'Brien) O'Toole.

Mr O'Toole was born May 3, 1921, in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late James and

Helen (Drohan) O'Toole. He worked as a supervisor for New York Telephone in Mt

Kisco and Peekskill, N.Y., retiring in 1983. Formerly of Yorktown Heights, he

moved to Heritage Village 12 years ago, where he was president of the Heritage

Village Wood Working Shop, a member of the Heritage Village Foundation

Committee and vice president of Condo 12. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart

Church where he served as an usher, and a US Air Force veteran of World War

II.

Besides his wife of 56 years and daughter, he leaves three sons, Brien O'Toole

of Somers, N.Y., James O'Toole of Danbury, and Bill O'Toole of Southbury; two

other daughters, Patricia Gold of Fairfax Station, Va., and Kim O'Toole

Hinderliter of Danbury; one brother, Jack O'Toole of Venice, Fla.; one sister,

Grace Willison of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was held December 21 at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street South,

Southbury. Burial was private.

Arrangements were by Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury.

Richard T. Klein

Richard T. Klein, 56, of 129 South King Street, Danbury, died December 17, at

his home. He was the husband of Elizabeth J. (Fuller) Klein and the father of

Barbara Ghent of Newtown.

Born in Danbury, October 15, 1942, he was a son of Alice Klein Smith of

Danbury and the late Arthur Klein. He attended Danbury schools.

A lifelong Danbury resident, Mr Klein was a self-employed carpenter. He was a

member of the Royal Order of the Moose Lodge in Danbury.

Besides his wife, mother, and daughter, he is survived by another daughter,

Kelly Perusse of Norwich; a brother, Arthur Klein Sr of New Milford; a sister,

Sherry Johnson of Belleview, Neb; his step-father, Ernest Smith of Danbury;

and his grandchildren, Richard Klein, Madison Ghent, and Summer Ghent, all of

Newtown; and several nieces and nephew.

Funeral services were conducted at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street,

Danbury, on December 21. Burial was in King Street Christian Church Cemetery.
