Local Quilter [Carole Ryan] Wins VT Festival Award
Carole A. Ryan of Newtown was awarded a yellow ribbon for her quilt,
"Pineapple Fields Forever" at a gala champagne preview held July 17 for this
year's Vermont Quilt Festival.
The contest portion of this year's festival showcased the work from 22 states
and three Canadian provinces, presenting a total of 148 quilts. The Festival
was presented in Northfield, Vt., July 18-20, on the campus of Norwich
University.
In addition to the contest division, the festival offered workshops and
lectures, a Merchants Mall, and appraisals of old and new quilts. The festival
additionally featured special displays, including the "Riva" quilts by art
quilter Ruth Reynolds; a retrospective of the quilts of contemporary artist
Ruth McDowell, an internationally recognized professional quilter with more
than 250 quilts to her name, the author of three books, and a highly
sought-after quilt teacher; and a collection of antique quilts, showcasing
rare stenciled quilts including a circa 1830 quilt recently acquired by The
Bennington Museum.
