Hawley Expansion Gets Zoning Variance
The Borough Zoning Board of Appeals has granted the public school system a
zoning variance that would allow a section of the proposed Hawley School
addition to be built closer to a property line than allowed by the borough
zoning regulations.
Appeals board members granted the variance at a January 23 session. School
Board Chairman Herbert Rosenthal represented the school system before the
panel.
The zoning variance, which was granted, concerns a section of the proposed
addition situated on the western edge of the school site at 29 Church Hill
Road. The variance reduces the "minimum side setback distance" for a small
portion of the proposed construction.
Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc. of New Britian is the architectural firm for the
project. Richter, Cegan & Webb, Inc, of Avon is the landscape architect.
The Hawley School expansion proposal will be subject to voters' action at a
yet-to-be-scheduled referendum. The Hawley School expansion would cost an
estimated $3.5 million.
