Falling For The Arts At Annual Autumn SCAN Show
(with cuts)
BY SHANNON HICKS
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown annually presents three exhibitions.
The third show of the year was presented last weekend at Newtown Meeting
House, when members in good standing of the Newtown based arts organization
presented the 1998 Fall Holiday Art Show and Sale.
An opening reception was held the evening of Friday, October 23, in the lower
meeting room of the former church building. The show had opened Friday
morning, and continued for two additional days, concluding during the late
afternoon of Sunday, October 25.
Over 50 artists were represented in this year's show, according to Ruth
Newquist, committee member who helped arrange and hang the show the day before
its opening. The artists were represented by 216 works, with some of the
artists contributing up to four pieces of their own original work. SCAN
president Pamela Danneman was chairman for this year's fall show.
The fall show is one of two presented by SCAN that includes works only by the
association's members. While the annual juried spring show traditionally
includes an awards ceremony during the show's opening reception, the fall show
is solely an exhibition. Like the spring show -- and the third annual SCAN
show, "Color in January" -- the artworks on view are available for purchase.
Among the artists included in the holiday show for the first time were new
members Michael Brent, who had a very large portfolio in oil on view; and
Marye McCarthy, with a pair of watercolors. Both artists were recent guests
for SCAN during the organization's popular bi-monthly meetings/artist
demonstrations.
