By Rita Easton

READING, PA -- Pennypacker-Andrews Auction Centre, Inc., of Shillington, Pa.,

held an unreserved antiques auction on October 21 following a two-and-a-half

hour exhibition. The Gouglersville Fire Company banquet hall was the site,

accommodating approximately 600 attendees, with half holding bidding numbers.

The 1,000 items crossing the block were cosigned by various local estates, and

generated a gross of approximately $175,000.

A collection of 98 hatpins, sold as 35 carded lots, fetched a total of

$7,584.50, all going to private collectors. The hatpins inspired the most

competitive bidding in the audience.

"This was the second half of the collection," said Cathy Pennypacker-Andrews,

"and it was amazing. We [previously] sold the first half and they were equally

as successful, within a few hundred dollars."

A collection of 30 miniature oil lamps sold as separate lots garnered a total

of $7,080; a two part painted dry sink/cupboard made of soft wood, in old

salmon color, having stepback over blind doors, circa 1800s, reached $5,600; a

three-drawer inlaid chest in rough poplar or mahogany, with a crazed surface,

reached $4,950; and a three-piece, Victorian, marble top bedroom suite in

walnut, with double bed, brought $4,550.

A two-part Dutch cupboard with two drawers went out at $4,840; a drawer

cupboard with double six light doors above and double cupboard doors below

reached $3,630 for the softwood lot; and a William Robert Montrose tall case

clock garnered $4,180.

A "Cashmere" Flow Blue pitcher sold at $3,410; "Cashmere" Flow Blue sauce

dishes made $660; a "Cashmere" platter went at $907.50; and a "Cashmere" Flow

Blue teapot also made $660. A painted candle box was purchased at $3,080; and

a sponge decorated miniature blanket chest achieved $2,860.

"Washing Day," a Jules Rozier oil on canvas, reached $2,090; a David Ellinger

watercolor of a parrot made $412.50; an F.F. English watercolor made $770; and

a pair of Fonceca watercolors of gentlemen made $1,320.

An Oberly-Womelsdorf coverlet was snapped up at $2,200; and a walnut

slant-front desk sold for the same amount. A fine example of an A. Thomson of

Glasgow tall case clock reached $2,090; an ornate gold gilt mirror went out at

$1,870; an oak mirrored back round china closet garnered $1,760; and a

Victorian hair wreath memorial was purchased at $1,705.

Fans of Gaudy Dutch were in competition for a "Single Rose" plate which was

won with the top bid of $1,045; and six "Pin Wheel" Gaudy ironstone plates

made $594. A Daum Nancy cameo vase sold at $440; and a Gaudy Welsh cream

picture went out at $231.

Auctioneering was shared by Cathy M. Pennypacker-Andrews of Reading and Luke

R. Whitman of Manheim.

Prices quoted include a ten percent buyers premium.
