OBITS (DeMeo; Krzywicki; Maron; Burkert; Kearney)

Genevieve DeMeo

Genevieve Diorio DeMeo, 80, mother of Jean Carnaghi of Newtown, died February

8 in St Joseph Manor, Trumbull.

She was the widow of Ralph J. DeMeo.

Mrs DeMeo was a lifelong Bridgeport resident, and had been employed in the

accounting department at Bryant Electric, and was a past member of the

Bridgeport Republican Town Committee.

Besides her daughter Jean she is survived by another daughter, Barbara Kelly

of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren, Andrew Carnaghi, Cara Ingalls and

Brett Kelly; three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Andrew Ingalls and Hayden

Carnaghi; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, February 13, at 9 am from the

Louis Abriola & Son Funeral Home, 426 East Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, with

a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St Patrick Church. Entombment in St

Michael Garden Mausoleum, Stratford.

Friends may call February 12 from 3 to 6 pm.

Joseph Krzywicki

Joseph Krzywicki, 77, a custodian at Sandy Hook School, died February 5 at

Bethel Health Care.

Mr Krzywicki, of 22 Lillinah Drive, Brookfield, was the husband of the late

Anne Berkowski Krzywicki.

He was born in Hudson, Penn., on May 3, 1920, a son of Joseph and Constance

Sienkweicz Krzywicki.

A resident of Brookfield for 35 years, he had been employed by the Newtown

Board of Education for 20 years.

During World War II, he served in Gen George Patton's 3rd Army as a combat

engineer in the European theater.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Krominsky and Ann Mientus, both of New

York State, and eight nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street,

Newtown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Rose Church. Cremation will

take place at Mt Grove Crematory in Bridgeport.

Florence E. Maron

Florence E. Maron, 81, a retired nurse and teacher, died February 8 at her

home at 27 Church Hill Road, Newtown.

Miss Maron was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., October 15, 1916, a daughter of Dr

August G. and Mary R. Donahue Maron.

She received her degree as a registered nurse from St Joseph's School of

Nursing in Elmira, N.Y. She later received her bachelor's and master's degrees

from St John's University in New York.

A nurse for more than 50 years, Miss Maron was on the nursing staff at St

John's Hospital, Long Island City, N.Y.

After moving to Newtown in 1967, she taught nursing at Bridgeport University,

the Norwalk Hospital School of Nursing and Mattatuck Community College in

Waterbury.

Miss Maron was a daily communicant at St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown. She was

also the founder of the Rosary Group at the church.

She is survived by a sister, Genevieve Maron of Newtown; a brother, August G.

Maron, Jr; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Rev Antonio Ventura, Mass of the

Apostolate, Mother of Sorrows Chapel, 3050 Gap Knot Road, New Hope, KY 40052.

Services were held February 11 at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street,

followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St Rose of Lima Church. Burial will

take place in St Rose Cemetery.

Herbert G. Burkert (with photo)

Herbert George Burkert, longtime community volunteer and member of the board

of the national organ transplant network, died on February 5 in Phoenix,

Ariz., where he had moved last year.

His survivors include his wife, Barbara; his sons, Gary Burkert of Cincinnati,

Ohio, Allen Burkert of Bristol, Conn., and Marc Burkert of Dover, N.H.; his

daughters, Karen Guarino of Naperville, Ill., Margaret Burkert of Phoenix,

Ariz., and Ingrid Acedo of Phoenix, Ariz.; his parents, George & Margaret

Burkert; and seven grandchildren.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated in 1953 from Lodi High School,

Lodi, N.J. He attended Newark College of Engineering, where he earned his

certificate in mechanical engineering.

He was a former member of the famous New Jersey Hawthorne Cabeleros & Garfield

Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps. He served in many capacities as a member of the New

Jersey Jaycees.

While living in Newtown, Mr Burkert served as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop

770 for many years, was the first chairperson of the reestablished Blue & Gold

Booster Club, and was president of the Newtown Adult American Field Service

(AFS) Chapter.

In May 1990, he underwent kidney transplant surgery at Brigham & Woman's

Hospital in Boston. That kidney failed to function but another transplant

operation in 1991 was successful. Following the surgery, Mr Burkert became a

strong advocate for public awareness of the organ and tissue donation program.

He served as chairperson of the Connecticut Volunteer Organ & Tissue Donor

Coalition and was appointed to serve on the national board of directors of

UNO's (United Network for Organ Sharing).

Though he was too ill to continue his volunteer work upon moving to Arizona in

1997, Mr Burkert left a legacy of community service.

David S. Kearney

David S. Kearney, 86, of Nunnawauk Meadows, died Wednesday at Danbury

Hospital. He was the husband of Jennie Cglowski Kearney.

Mr Kearney was born in Fishkill Landing, N.Y., on January 13, 1912, a son of

James and Nellie Walsh Kearney. He had lived in Bethel until moving to Newtown

two years ago.

He was a retired inspector for the Sperry Rail Company of Danbury.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Brenda Balzarini of Danbury,

two granddaughters, Terry Balzarini and Sharon Balzarini Geegen, and three

great-grandchildren, Jason Whitman, Anthony Balzarini and Justin Balzarini..

Calling hours were Thursday, February 12, from 6 to 8 pm at the Honan Funeral

Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, with the service at 8 pm at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.
