B Y D OROTHY E VANS

The nationwide celebration of "Catholic Schools Week" that begins Sunday,

January 26, and ends Saturday, February 1, will be marked by a series of

events planned at St. Rose School at 40 Church Hill Road.

Community members or families new to the area interested in transferring their

children to the school are welcome to attend any or all of the scheduled

events or tour the school at any time during the week, according to St. Rose

School Principal Donna DeLuca.

"Even though school will be in session, we hope families will take this

opportunity to visit us. There's no need to call first, just feel free to stop

in," Mrs DeLuca said Wednesday.

She mentioned, in particular, the Kindergarten Open House that will be held

Tuesday, January 28, from 9:30 to 11 am. School tours will be ongoing during

Open House day, she added.

The schedule of events for "Catholic Schools Week" at St. Rose is as follows:

Sunday, January 26: Communion Breakfast after 9 am Mass in the Parish Hall.

A Community Recognition will take place after the pancake breakfast to honor

Newtown's volunteer firemen in the Hook and Ladder #1 and Sandy Hook Fire and

Rescue companies, the Newtown Ambulance Corps and the Newtown Police

Department.

Mary Kelly, director of school transportation, will also be honored.

Monday, January 27: Bus Driver Appreciation Day includes a coffee from 7 to 11

for the drivers to stop by after their morning runs.

A "Sundae on Monday" party, also in honor of the bus drivers, will be enjoyed

by the children at 1 pm.

Tuesday, January 28: Open House from 9:30-11 am.

School Mass will take place at 7 pm at St. Mary's Church in Bethel off Route

302 on Dodgingtown Road, with the Most Rev Edward Egan from the diocese of

Bridgeport presiding.

Wednesday, January 29: "Mikata" assembly for kindergarten through eighth

grade, 9:30 am in the Parish Hall, featuring African dancers.

Pep Rally at 1 pm.

Basketball at 7 pm will feature the Middle School faculty/staff vs the eighth

grade.

Thursday, January 30: Talent Show presented by the fifth grade at 1 pm in the

Parish Hall.

Friday, January 31: Grandparents/Special Friend Day includes a special Mass at

10 am in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Children will welcome their special guests for a bring-your-own lunch.

Any questions or for further information, call 426-5102.

Founded in 1957, St. Rose is Newtown's only parochial school and it serves

children in kindergarten and grades one through eight.
