Newtown Travel Team Third In I-84 League

The Newtown Warriors, a 12-year-old C division travel team, finished in third place in the Interstate 84 Summer Baseball League.

Newtown competed against B-teams from towns along the I-84 corridor as well as others such as Monroe, Easton, Fairfield, Wilton, and Bedford of New York. This team of scrappy, hard-nosed young ballplayers proved to all teams it encountered that it was a force to be reckoned with. In the I-84 playoffs, the Warriors, competing as the No. 7 seed, defeated Southbury 9-5, blanked No. 3 Wilton 9-0, outslugged No. 4 New Milford 10-7, and toppled No. 5 Fairfield American 19 -2. The season came to an end when the Warriors lost 8-5 to eventual champ Fairfield National, and then gave their friends and classmates from the Newtown Bombers B team all it could handle in a well-played and exciting one run loss.

The Warriors also participated in the Middlebury Invitational “Under the Lights” A-Division Tournament where they competed against A teams from several Connecticut towns. Playing against battle tested and, theoretically, superior teams, the Warriors posted a 2-5 record, as well as an extra-inning loss to a four-town all-star team from Litchfield County.

The Newtown team became synonymous with grittiness, effort, togetherness, and a never-say-die attitude. The boys provided their parents and coaches with many exciting and proud moments throughout their seven week journey. The coaches and parents thank RJ Roman and Bryan Czel, Newtown High School varsity baseball team captains, who volunteered their free time to help train the boys.
