The Newtown High School boys’ golf team is gearing up for an exciting season, and the two-time South-West Conference Champion Nighthawks are ready to defend their title once again.

Winning it all will require the emergence of some new leaders after graduation significantly changed the shape of the team.

“While we said goodbye to five talented seniors last year, we have a strong core of six returning players eager to continue our winning tradition,” Coach Shawn Tierney said.

Juniors Will Lokey and Jack Wishneski are set to lead the team, playing at the number one and two positions, respectively. Lokey is coming off an impressive All-State performance last season and is poised for another standout year.

“We’ll also be counting on our senior captains, Quinn Kull and Jamie Piccuillo. This is their fourth year on the team, and they’ve been instrumental in our championship victories over the past two seasons. Additionally, seniors Tanner Smith and Ben Cocozza are looking to step up and secure spots in the top five,” Tierney said.

“With our solid group of returning players and over ten new athletes trying out this week, we’re confident that we have the talent and depth to make another run at the championship. We look forward to another successful season and appreciate the community’s continued support. A big thank you to Rock Ridge for continuing to host the team,” Tierney said.

The Nighthawks are set to open the regular season Tuesday, August 19, when Immaculate of Danbury visits Rock Ridge Country Club at 3 pm.
