After the brother of religious spinster Rose Sayer (Hepburn) is killed in WWI Africa, dissolute steamer captain Charlie Allnut (Bogart) offers her safe passage on his dilapidated river steamboat, The African Queen. Rosie is not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat. The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans, but time alone on the river eventually leads to a change of heart for both.
