A New Flag Flies

In Newtown

Tossing the comment over his shoulder, Rotary Club of Newtown member Alan Clavette said, “It’s another big flag in town.” He was walking away Wednesday morning from a ceremony made brief by the heat where moments earlier Rotary member and retired Army Colonel Gary Steele hoisted a flag to the top of its pole in a new green and sitting area at Fairfield Hills.

The project was made possible in part from the club’s $25,000 contribution, and grant funds. No tax dollars went into the project that now offers campus guests a finished green with benches, landscaping, and paving stones seated between Woodbury and Newtown Halls.

With the flag raised and officials gathered including Director of Economic and Community Development Elizabeth Stocker, Fairfield Hills Authority and Rotary members, Parks and Recreation staff, and others involved in the project, Mr Clavette noted, “This will be a real focal point in town …”

Authority Chairman Bob Geckle thanked the Rotary, recreation crews, and private businesses that helped complete the flag and surrounding green, noting that an official dedication is slated for September or October.
