A Flair For Photography

RIDGEFIELD — The rotating exhibit of guest artists in the Ridgefield Library’s Dayton Program Room will finish the year with a series of photographic works. Viewing is free of charge. The library is at 472 Main Street.

Through December, the library will feature “Ridgefielders with a Flair for Photography,” which in addition to one-man shows will also include group shows with local photographers from around Ridgefield joining in the fun.

Ridgefielder Stuart Evensen will be the first photographer to show his work this fall when he presents an exhibit revealing a journalistic perspective entitled “HarlemScapes.” Mr Evensen has been visiting Harlem over the past seven years with just his camera and lenses in tow and has taken many candid as well as posed portraits of the people he meets on the streets there.

He finds his interactions with the Harlem locals just as fascinating as he does taking their pictures, and sees his project as a social study in addition to an artistic pursuit.

He also focuses his lens on the environment, including the architecture, mural work and “signage” of the Harlem streets, with a particular interest in what he refers to as the process of “structure and decay.”

Mr Evensen is originally from the West Coast, where his work appeared in various regional galleries. He offers a fresh look at one of New York City’s most talked about areas. Also practiced in classical Japanese watercolors and calligraphy, he has an eye for light and balance which is detectable in his photographic style as well.
