Celiac Support Group To Meet

DANBURY – Dr Robert Kapel, gastroenterologist and medical advisor to the Nutmeg Celiac Support Group, will speak on celiac disease on Friday, September 8, at 7:30 pm at the Center for Behavioral and Mental Health, a Danbury hospital facility on Lake Avenue.

Dr Kapel will discuss the symptoms of celiac disease, its diagnosis, long-term effects when the condition goes untreated, and the lifelong diet of gluten-free foods.

Nearly one out of every 150 Americans suffer from celiac disease, according to new studies by the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research in Baltimore. The disease is a genetic disorder in which gluten sets off an autoimmune reaction that causes the destruction of villi in the small intestine. Symptoms include weight loss, chronic fatigue, diarrhea, malnutrition, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Celiacs can lead normal, healthy lives by following a gluten-free diet which means avoiding all products derived from wheat, oats, barley, and rye, and a few other grains.

The Nutmeg Celiac Support Group was started 13 years ago by the mothers of children diagnosed with the disease. Members share information about food products, stores and sources for mail order supplies, advise the newly diagnosed and meet to hear programs on relevant subjects. Rich Gannon, quarterback for the National League Oakland Raiders and his wife, Shelly, are national spokespersons for celiac awareness and research. Their daughter has the condition.

Dr Kapel received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, was chief resident in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The group will meet on November 3 for a program on nutrition and stress relief, and on December 8 for a gluten-free holiday party. For more information, call Edith Meffley at 438-6108.
