Is There A Local Increase In The ‘Surveillance State’?
To the Editor:
Things that make you go “hmm...”
I have been wondering what the cameras with solar panels are. Two that come to mind are located at busy intersections at exit 10 and then on Berkshire Rd/Toddy Hill. Once you see them you can’t miss them. After reading a story in [another newspaper] I believe them to be license plate readers. Has Newtown entered a deeper level of surveillance by law enforcement? The technology is not new it has been deployed on patrol cars for years however the connection to the possibility these devices are from Flock Safety whose message is “Shaping the Future of Safety, Together with coverage that never sleeps.” The article continues “Use of the Flock software requires officers to provide an investigatory justification, though no warrant or judicial intervention is required.” Further this technology was allegedly misused in Texas by law enforcement to track a women seeking an abortion. If these devices, which are being deployed across the country, can do more then read license plates we should all be concerned with an increase in the “surveillance state.” Couple the readers with AI and you get a new level of Big Brother is Watching.
