Allan Keiler Will Keynote This Yearâs Freedom Trail Celebration
DANBURY â Dr Allan Keiler, the author of Marian Anderson: A Singerâs Journey, will be the keynote speaker at the Housatonic Valley Tourism Districtâs 2000 Freedom Trail Month Celebration on Thursday, September 14.
The Honorable Gene F. Eriquez, Mayor of the City of Danbury; Adam Corson Finnerty, director of external affairs, University of Pennsylvania (the home of the Marian Anderson Archive); and Blanche Burton-Lyles, president and founder of the Marian Anderson Historical Society in Philadelphia, are also expected to attend.

Known for his scholarship in music theory, Dr Keiler is currently professor of music at Brandeis University. Marian Anderson: A Singerâs Journey is considered by many to be the definitive biography of the legendary vocalist and Civil Rights figure whose 1939 Easter Sunday performance in front of 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial catapulted her into national prominence and made her a symbol for racial equality.
The Connecticut Freedom Trail was established in 1995 by the Connecticut General Assembly in recognition of the numerous sites in the state that are associated with the heritage and struggle for freedom of its African-American citizens. Among the sites along the Freedom Trail are the Anderson Studio, a building associated with the Underground Railroad the Amistad case, as well as historic graves, monuments and homes.
