Dr Neil Chaudhary, a nationally respected traffic safety scientist and former Newtown Police Commissioner, has announced his candidacy to return to the Police Commission — this time as a Forward Party candidate committed to non-partisan service.

Chaudhary brings more than two decades of experience working with law enforcement to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. He holds a PhD in behavioral research and has collaborated with police agencies across the country, served on several key Connecticut state task forces — including those on DUI, seat belt use, and teen driving — and has testified as an expert before the National Transportation Safety Board on distracted driving.

“The Police Commission is Newtown’s traffic authority,” said Chaudhary. “It’s essential that we have members with real expertise — not just party endorsements. I’ve devoted my career to evidence-based public safety, and I’m ready to serve again with integrity, professionalism, and independence.”

A 23-year Newtown resident, Chaudhary previously served as a Police Commissioner, and was elected to Newtown Legislative Council, where he served for five years. During that time, he was vice chair of the Council and also chaired the Education Subcommittee, while also serving on the Public Safety Committee, as well as the Council’s Municipal Operations and Ordinance Subcommittees.

Although he is running as a Forward Party candidate, Chaudhary believes strongly that the Police Commission should remain non-partisan.

“Political parties often find bodies to fill positions whether that body belongs to a worthy candidate or not,” he said. “That kind of tribal politics hurts our town.

“The Newtown Forward Party is different; we are looking for candidates who would be beneficial to the town. If we don’t find a worthy candidate, we don’t run a candidate,” Chaudhary added. “We need to elect the most qualified people — period.”

Chaudhary and his wife raised their children in Newtown, both of whom have attended Newtown public schools. He hopes to return to the Police Commission with the trust of voters who value knowledge, experience, and putting community first.
