Andrew Fiscella scored 31 points – nine of those in the fourth quarter – and assisted Alex Caruso on the game-winning basket to lead St. John’s to a 50-47 win over Boston College last Friday night at Treadwell Park in the championship game of the Rising Stars Summer Basketball League.

Fiscella, a Newtown High freshman, led all scorers.

Led by Dave Anderson, also a Newtown High freshman, Boston College used a 15-6 run in the second half to turn an eight-point deficit into a one-point lead. However, Fiscella’s acrobatic drives to the basket, Caruso’s layup and Tim Kerr’s foul shot stymied the comeback.

Despite being down by only three points late in the game, Boston College was helpless due to the fact that there is no three-point line painted on the Treadwell Park courts. It didn’t matter, however, as the Eagles threw the ball away as the clock expired.

Boston College, the second seed, came out on fire in the first quarter and took a 16-0 lead, with Anderson scoring 10 of those points. But Fiscella responded with 12 points of his own in the second quarter as St John’s went on a 17-10 run.

Boston College, coached by Josh Dittmar, led 26-25 at halftime. Anderson led the Eagles with 22 points (16 in the first half), while Pete Dittmar added 14 points, including eight in the final quarter.

Anthony Santella added nine points for St John’s, which entered the eight-team playoffs as the third seed.

In semifinal action, St John’s defeated top-seeded Rhode Island, 72-39, as Fiscella poured in 28, Kerr scored 16 and John Kostecki chipped in with 13. This game was close until St John’s went on a 21-4 to end the half up 38-20. The Red Storm, coached by John Fiscella and Amanda Marsilio, continued the onslaught in the second half, outscoring Rhode Island, 34-19.

Rhode Island was led by Pat Armstrong’ 19 points and John Oliver’s 16.

In the other semifinal, Boston College beat UMass, 70-64. UMass found itself down by as much as 20 points before battling back. It was too little too late, however.

Boston College’s balanced scoring attack was paced by Anderson (22 points), Kyle Hastedt (20 points) and Dittmar (16 points).

For fourth-seeded UMass, Stephan Lamb scored 24 points and Marcus Tracy added 20. Matt McFadden tossed in 10.

NOTE: Newtown High School boys’ basketball team members, who helped coach the league, had a championship game of their own in the War Memorial summer league on the night of the Rising Star finals.
