Harvest Health & Safety Fair Set For Saturday, Sept 16

The Newtown Health and Public Safety Fair will have a new theme for its millennium year 2000 event when the fair is held on Saturday, September 16, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Newtown Middle School.

The theme of this year’s fair will be “Harvest Health” and the fair will feature a mini farmer’s market with fresh produce from Newtown farmers and local residents who have excess in their backyard gardens.

“This is an exciting new addition to the fair this year,” said fair co-chairman Mae Schmidle. “Residents can come [to] learn about and experience good health as well as being able to enjoy local fresh vegetables and fruit – organic in most cases – plus lots of fresh and free apples.”

As always, there will be something for everyone at the annual fair: free admission, free blood pressure screening, free skin cancer screening, free eye screening, free posture-scoliosis screening, free information and literature, free cholesterol screening, and much more. The Health Report Card, a popular offering last year, will again be featured.

The Newtown Woman’s Club will sponsor a health slogan contest for school children. Newtown students will be encouraged to enter the contest by writing an original health slogan (such as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”). There will be prizes in three categories: grades 1-3, grades 4-5, and grades 6-8. The health slogan entry form will be published in The Bee as well as distributed in local schools immediately after Labor Day.

“As a Health Fair special, the Harvest Health and Public Safety Fair will distribute handsome bookmarks at the Labor Day Parade,” added Dr Della Schmidt.
