Town & Country Garden Club will open its 2025-26 season on Wednesday, September 10, with a program on “Designing Gardens Using Native Plants and Artwork.”

Donna Katsuranis will present the program, which will begin at 7 pm at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street. All are welcome, free of charge.

Katsuranis is an interfaith minister and an advanced master gardener who lives and gardens in Brookfield, despite lots of “help” from her dog and the local deer. Katsuranis has taught numerous advanced master gardener classes, and has lectured throughout the Northeast for groups from garden clubs and libraries to mental health associations and the CT Flower & Garden show.

Her writings have been published in CT Gardener magazine and other publications. She is also founder of the Kiwanis Giving Garden in Brookfield, where volunteers grow veggies for local food pantries.

Katsuranis teaches and guides walks year-round on nature and spiritual subjects. Her dearest wish is to help people to reconnect with nature.

Her September 10 program will explore some of the remarkable diversity that exists in local forests and fields, and can be adapted to regional back yards. Katsuranis will also include some information on incorporating artworks into a personalized landscape.

Native plants are enjoying a new popularity — and rightly so. While many people think of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants as being just part of the background, they are remarkably suited to starring roles on the botanical stage. Rugged without belligerence, delicate without wimpiness, and beautiful without being prima donnas, all while being responsible citizens of the larger landscape, natives are the ultimate “Right-Plant/Right-Place.”

Attendees will be given ideas on how to use small sculptures and art to create an artistic flair and create visually appealing and interesting sections throughout their gardens.

Town & Country Garden Club’s objectives include promoting interest in horticulture, increasing knowledge of artistic use of plant material, furthering the conservation of natural resources, and encouraging and assisting in civic projects.

Those interested in learning more and/or joining the club are invited to send email to townandcountrygardenclubct@gmail.com.

Despite lots of “help” from her dog and the local deer, Donna Katsuranis is an advanced master gardener who has successfully designed gardens featuring native plant materials and small sculpture.
