Snapshot: Jennifer Chaudhary
Nickname: Jen.
Family: My husband, Neil; and we have two children, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old.
How did you meet your husband? Neil and I met online before it was popular. We played a role playing type game, back when it was dial-up. We’ll be married 29 years this year.
Pets: We have two small dogs.
How long have you lived in Newtown? About 22 years so far.
Where do you work and what do you do? Neil and I own a traffic safety research firm, and we have two offices — one in Trumbull and our satellite office in Mississippi. I run both offices.
What organizations, clubs and/or communities of faith are you part of? I am the current president of The Rotary Club of Newtown. I was on the Edmond Town Hall board for six years, and chair for one. I was the chairperson of Trinity Day School. I’m currently on the Town Public Safety Committee (DOC/Garner); vice chair of the NHS Choral Parents Committee; and I am on the Safe School Climate Committee for the high school — I’ve done that every year our children have been in the schools. We tend to go the Methodist church in Monroe, or occasionally we’ll go to Newtown Congregational Church.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a forensic psychologist, which is probably why I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts.
What is your favorite podcast? I really like “Serialously.” It’s all true crime.
What do you like to do in your free time? I read a lot. We love to travel. I also do some embroidery, to keep my hands busy. We also swim a lot.
Do you have a favorite author? Neil picks the books we read. We read the same books, so I never know the title or who wrote it up front, but he puts it on my Kindle and I read it and then we talk about it. We both enjoy fantasy books.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? Anywhere abroad. We just recently went to Greece and Italy and Scotland. I’d like to go back and explore more. Scotland was one of my favorites.
Favorite musical genre? I love hard rock. When I have my choice I’ll listen to Five Finger Death Punch, but I have a teenage daughter so I don’t always get to pick my music.
What was the most recent concert you went to? My daughter and I saw Billie Eilish. That’s something we try to do with the kids as often as we can because we all love music.
What is your proudest accomplishment? My kids. I don’t think anything will ever top that. Your kids are everything, and it’s fun to watch them grow into these amazing humans that you hoped that they would be.
Do you have any pet peeves? I don’t like to hear people chew.
Favorite color? Red.
Favorite food? Indian food.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Don’t forget to take care of yourself. It sounds simple but it’s so important. It’s something I have a hard time doing — putting myself first.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? I love Newtown. I love the people. I love the small town feel. I’m from a small town and even though this is much bigger than where I’m from, it’s nice to be able to go to the grocery store and see people I know. I love the diversity in the restaurants we have now. It’s becoming a destination, and I love that.
Do you have a personal credo? It’s an Albert Einstein quote: “Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value.” That really embodies what I believe in as far as giving back and being of value to your community. It’s how we try to raise our kids and live by, just like Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”
