Discusses Suicide Prevention
To The Editor:
Did you know that suicide is a public health problem and the leading cause of death in the United States? Over 49,000 people died by suicide in 2023. That is one death every 11 minutes. In 2023, firearms accounted for 55.36% of all suicide deaths.
In the same year, there were 356 deaths by suicide in Connecticut. Suicide is ranked the 15th leading cause of death in Connecticut.
To me, one death by suicide is one death too many. September is Suicide Prevention Month. While we may bring attention to this serious subject in September, this is a 365 day a year crisis. If you think someone is thinking about suicide, assume you are the only one who will reach out. Listen to their story and let them know you care. Ask directly about suicide, calmly and without judgment. Show understanding and take their concerns seriously. Let them know their life matters to you. That one conversation could save a life.
988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — the national mental health hotline that is available 24/7 across the United States by text, phone, or chat. It is a myth that 988 is only for emergencies. You can reach out to 988 anytime if you or someone you care about is feeling hopeless, stressed, stuck, or having a rough day. There is never any shame in reaching out. 988 counselors are available for all kinds of judgment free support.
The Newtown Suicide Prevention Initiative is grateful to the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association. They will be donating a portion of their sales on September 13th to us. Their donation will help us continue to bring awareness and resources to our community. Please stop by their thrift shop at 45 Main Street.
This is a national health crisis. We all need to work together to try to bring awareness, reduce the stigma and help save lives.
