The World - But Not Newtown, Apparently - Is Full Of Optimists
The World â But Not Newtown, Apparently â Is Full Of Optimists
To the Editor:
Recently I visited family in Newtown. During my visit my sister-in-law shared with me the editorial section of The Newtown Bee weekly newspaper for the past six or seven weeks. After reading these letters I was speechless. I didnât realize the uptightness and pessimism that abounds in Newtown. This entire controversy began when one man, Brendan Duffy, after having spent a wonderful vacation with family and friends decided to share his happiness and optimism with the town [âNuggets of Wisdom,â Letter Hive, July 11, 2008]. His vacation rejuvenated him in a way that most of us would hope our vacations would rejuvenate us. His vacation renewed his love for his family, his friends and his country. Despite the troubles abounding at this time in all of our lives, Mr Duffyâs vacation allowed him to be thankful for all that he has. His vacation reminded him to look on the brighter side of things despite the worldâs current gloom. And with this rejuvenated spirit came a desire to spread this joy and optimism with all of you. He did this with the clear message that although things are bad, there is another way to look at all of it that might help you get through the day. Thatâs all. Period. He wasnât looking to pick a fight. He wasnât looking to debate the war. He wasnât looking for someone to buy him The New York Times. Bobby, Laura, and all the others that wrote in to chastise this man for being optimistic should be ashamed of themselves. Optimism is not a bad thing. The world is full of optimists. I would hate to live with only the pessimistic Bobbys of the world (Or would you prefer âRobbieâ).
