Changing The Character Of Sandy Hook
Changing The CharacterÂ
Of Sandy Hook
To the Editor:
I was in opposition to the proposed changes for Sandy Hook before I even saw the bankâs architectâs rendering this week in The Bee. What an unattractive building the Newtown Savingâs Bank has submitted. It looks like the front building of a correctional facility circa 1950 with no redeeming qualities. It really will change the character of that corner in Sandy Hook for the worse.
The main branch on Main Street is very appealing in contrast. Why not go with a design along the same lines instead of a menacing facade? It is such a shame that Mary Hawley is no longer around to be on the committee for Newtownâs Planning and Zoning. Her vision of Newtown was one of enduring, classic, elegant design.
From everything Iâve heard, this issue was rushed through approvals before too many people were aware what was happening with the proposal; one of those behind the scene deals with only âcertainâ people present. Everyone asks what good is it to have zoning laws when anyone can petition to change them and not have to worry about public opinion ?
