NSB Tops In Regional Food Drive Contributions

According to regional United Way officials, those living at or below the poverty level in Newtown and surrounding communities often do not know when their next meal may be. And the economic downturn has resulted in more from the area struggling to make ends meet every day.

Many who have never had to consider community support are turning to food pantries as a source to feed their family, a fact that has been confirmed locally by Social Services Director Ann Piccini.

This year as part of its annual Days of Caring event, 3,861 pounds of food was collected at 30 sites throughout region and distributed to local food banks and the Salvation Army. And Newtown Savings Bank is a regular participant in that Days of Caring Food Drive.

For the second year in a row the United Way announced that the NSB main office and its branches collected the most food in the drive.

In fact, the NSB donations represented almost half of all the food collected in the entire drive. Each year the bank has an inter-departmental competition to see which department can bring in the most food in weight per person. This year the Deposit Operations Department came in first place, collecting 37 pounds of food per person.

A total of 1,800 pounds of food were collected among all the NSB branches, with the majority being collected at the bank’s headquarters on Main Street.
