Panthers Claw To Tourney Victory

The Newtown Panthers, a girls’ soccer team, went to Fairfield for the Fall Annual Soccer Tournament and came away as champions following four impressive wins. Game highlights are as follows:

Newtown 1, Madison 0: Newtown played a tough Madison team in their first round. Juliett Harrity scored on an assist from Alexis Mason. The offense was anchored by Isabella Jimenez, with a solid mid-field play — led by Anna Moscovici and Caroline Condon — helping to secure the tough offensive push. Great defense by Maria Ringes, Audrey Sedensky, and Catherine Shaw helped secure the win. Kira Kelly earned the shutout in goal.

Newtown 3, Fairfield White Lightning 0: Kira Kelly, again in goal, kept all Fairfield shots at bay. The scoring was started by Juliett Harrity who took good advantage of a rebound into the middle of the field, and Alexis Mason scored twice with an assist from Audrey Sedensky. The strong midfield of Greta Staubly, Mary Hufziger, and Anna Moscovici, in conjunction with solid defensive play by Diana Kirkman, Maria Ringes, and Catherine Shaw, led to the Panther win.

Newtown 2, Fairfield Silver 0: Juliett Harrity had her third goal in three games on an assist from Audrey Sedensky. Isabella Jimenez took advantage of a header from Greta Staubly to score the second goal. Anchoring the team, yet again, was Kira Kelly in goal, getting her third shutout of the tournament. Strong midfield play, as well as a solid defense, kept the Panthers on a winning streak.

Newtown 4, Southbury Firecrackers 1: The Panthers fought off their exhaustion in game four and really showed just how tough they can be at the end of a long hot day. Newtown kept pressure on the Southbury defense and, after a quick first score by the Firecrackers, were relentless in that pressure. Isabella Jimenez assisted Alexis Mason for the Panthers’ first score – they never looked back. Alexis Mason scored the second goal on a corner, Audrey Sedensky pushed the ball to Alexis Mason who again capitalized for another goal. Another goal came on nice throw-in by Audrey Sedensky to Anna Moscovici who took the ball directly to the goal. Alexis  Mason finished the game with a hat-trick,  scoring on an assist from Audrey Sedensky.

The Panthers couldn’t have been successful without the fantastic play of Diana Kirkman, Caroline Condon, Juliett Harrity, Mary Hufziger, Maria Ringes, Greta Staubly, Catherine Shaw, and Kira Kelly in goal.
