U12 Blue Team Wins Soccer Tournament
Newtownâs U12 Blue boysâ soccer team won the Fall Annual Soccer Tournament in Fairfield during Labor Day Weekend.
 In the first game, Newtown beat the host town Fairfield White 1-0. Nathan Augenbraunâs corner kick in the early moments of the second half was all Newtown needed to shut down the opponent. Dillion Kretz, Sam Grossano, and Thomas Leuci kept play on the Fairfield side of the pitch all day. Robert Katrinak and Alex Hess played shutdown goal. Connery Mayer, Jack Riley, Jack Lavelle, and Ben Tuffy played overwhelming defense, frustrating Fairfieldâs offense.
In game two, Newtownâs defense shut down the most powerful offense they would face all weekend for a 0-0 tie with a powerful Madison team. The D, led by Connery Mayer and Jack Riley, along with Matthew Guinee and Jack Lavelle, limited Madison to few scoring opportunities. Owen Samson, Zach Van De Weerdt, Alex Hess and Luke Caplan put pressure on the Madison defense with great passes and numerous shots on goal. Robert Katrinak again pitched a shutout in goal.
Newtown beat Weston 3-0 in the third game. Nathan Augenbraun found the goal again quickly with a blast from the right side of the box. Sam Grossano scored on a quick strike of his own, and Dillion Kretz closed out the scoring with a blast from the left side. Owen Samson, Zach Van De Weerdt, and Luke Caplanâs deft passing kept the pressure on the Weston D.
In the final game, for the championship, Newtown blanked Fairfield Silver, 1-0. Newtown took multiple shots on goal and played great defense. Late in the second half, Thomas Leuci ended the tournament in Newtownâs favor with a blast off a Dillion Kretz rebound. Matthew Guinee, Ben Tuffy, Jack Lavelle, Robert Katrinak, Connery Mayer, and Jack Riley completed a great tournament with their third shutout.
