Comets Win Ridgefield Labor Day Tournament   Â
The Newtown Comets opened their fall season in style, allowing just one goal throughout the weekend, and walking as the U-11 champions of the Ridgefield Labor Day Tournament.
In game one, a scoreless tie against Wilton, the recently expanded team worked through the adjustment to a bigger playing field and the integration of five new players. In game two the Comets soared past Ridgefield 4-0. Mikayla Kuligowski and Katie Mossbarger got the scoring started and Casey Harkins provided an assist. To round out the offensive attack, Alana Murray fed the ball to Mossbarger for another tally. Quinn Karp had an assist and Victoria Kirkman added a goal.
The Comets then beat Easton-Redding 3-0. A nice save by goalkeeper Emily Charash secured the shutout. Karp had two goals and Kuligowski added another. Mossbarger and Christina DeBartolomeo provided the assists.
In the final game, the Comets beat Darien 3-1. Midfielder Alyssa Ruefenacht and Kuligowski (who scored her third and fourth goals of the tournament) led the way. Mossbarger had an assist in each half.
