Support Art In The Middle School

To the Editor:

I would like to thank and show my support for the art department at the Newtown Middle School.

Having just been to both the seventh and eighth grade open houses in the past two weeks, it’s a topic that is fresh on my mind.

Arlene Spoonfeather made some very passionate comments on art and its relationship to all aspects of learning. While some may have found her comments a little intense, I think she was speaking from the heart and very genuine. She pointed out that each child has approximately 30 other classes in-between their weekly art class — that’s only about 35 classes per year. I think she’s right. Art is important. It helps kids build confidence and a sense of self, something that is so important at this age. It helps to give a voice to kids without making them stand out too much. The middle school years are such a difficult time. It may be embarrassing for them to talk about certain issues or feelings, but much easier to work through them artistically.

Arlene spoke to the previous superintendent requesting that art receive two classes per cycle instead of one. She was told no. I hope that she keeps pushing for that, and, that our new superintendent is more willing to work with her.

I will support Arlene Spoonfeather, Claudia Mitchell, and Jean Walter and encourage other parents to do the same.

Thank you,

Janet McKeown
