The members of the Newtown Marching Nighthawks begin their summer rehearsals early in July in preparation for fall competition. Their practice schedule intensifies the week before school begins with band camp starting at 8 am and ending at 9 pm. In addition to summer rehearsals, fall practice takes place on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as before each Saturdayâs competition. Members must be able to read music and memorize their parts, work as a team, and maintain their stamina and poise on the field.
The musicians and color guard of the Newtown Marching Nighthawks often arrive back at NHS after competitions very late at night, tired but, for the last three years, Musical Arts Conference Class IV champions. Their teamwork and discipline is inspirational and their musicality is outstanding. Their successes, as well as the dedication of those who coach the Newtown Marching Nighthawks, should be recognized and reported on during the upcoming season. The season begins on September 13 with a competition at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. On October 18, the Marching Nighthawks will host the Grasso Festival at Newtown High School and take the field in exhibition at the end of the festival. I hope you donât miss it!
Very truly yours,
Melinda Reynolds
