Field Hockey Team Logs Road Victories In Nonconference Clashes
Newtown High School’s field hockey team won twice in less than 24 hours to improve to 2-1 to start the fall. The Nighthawks edged host Daniel Hand of Madison 2-1 on the evening of September 5 then went to Groton and defeated Fitch High 3-0 the next afternoon — both nonconference clashes.
Against Daniel Hand, Kaitlyn Doyle scored in the first quarter with an assist from Charlotte Grasso, and Corynn Hettenbach scored in the third quarter, also assisted by Grasso. Both goals came about from nice crosses by Grasso and Doyle and Hettenbach having their sticks down for deflections into the cage. Doyle and Hettenbach each recorded their first varsity goals.
Goaltender Stella Wasley recorded six saves and got a little help along the way. Amanda Faircloth recorded a defensive save, preventing what would have been the tying goal late in regulation.
Emily O’Neil, Evelynn Schoen, Doyle, Grasso, and Lucia Romano had a great showing, Coach Megan Goyda said.
In the Fitch game, Schoen scored in the first quarter off a penalty corner with a beautiful reverse chip. Grasso recorded another assist with her insert in on the corner. O’Neil scored an unassisted goal in the second quarter after capitalizing on a rebound off the goalie’s pads, then recorded her second goal of the day off an assist from Schoen.
Wasley came up with some big saves to earn the shutout. Faircloth, Schoen, O’Neil, Grasso, Doyle, and Kaylin Pimentel all had great games.
“Overall it was a great turnaround from earlier in the week,” said Goyda, whose team opened the season with a 5-0 loss to Branford on September 2. “We moved the ball well, used our field lanes, carved the ball beautifully, and just had a stronger offensive presence overall. Our defensive unit continued to hold strong and gave the opposing offense a really hard time. Even on penalty corners it was difficult for the other teams to get quality shots off.”
The Nighthawks, after a home matchup with South-West Conference foe Immaculate of Danbury on Wednesday, will visit Clinton’s Morgan High on Saturday, September 13 at 2 pm. Then it is back to SWC action as Brookfield visits NHS Monday, September 15 at 6 pm.
