A Helping Hand

To the Editor:

Congresswoman Nancy Johnson’s recent visit to our Senior Center on Riverside Road demonstrates once again her strong concern for those among us who need a helping hand. From her leadership position in the United States Congress, Nancy Johnson has reached out to assist needy seniors, parents, and children alike. She wrote laws extending prescription drug benefits to 38 million seniors. She authored the law creating the children’s health insurance program, known as “Husky” here in Connecticut. And parents should know that she is leading the fight in Congress against Internet child predators.

Newtown families have benefited not only from these efforts, which protect and serve all Americans, but also from her actions specifically directed to help our local community. Nancy won $1.6 million to relieve traffic problems on Edmond Road and Route 6. The Congresswoman secured $3 million for job training along the Danbury/Newtown/Waterbury corridor. She pushed through $2.7 million for improvements to I-84 in and around Danbury and Newtown. She even acquired $135,000 for renovation of the Batchhelder property here in town.

Congresswoman Nancy Johnson’s strong and independent voice should continue to be heard in the halls of the United States Congress. We should support her efforts on our behalf this November.
