Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*APPLE BAKING CONTEST on September 20. Bake up you favorite apple recipe for judging. Judging will begin at 1 pm. Call ahead with what you will be bringing; stay to participate in sample after judges award the prizes

*OLDE TIME FAVORITES, Thursday, September 21, at 1 pm. Join Larry Ayce for some sing-along, dancing or just sit back and enjoy.

*TAI CHI  & CHI KUNG will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 pm. Steve Kurimai will instruct the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination and relaxation.

*BALLROOM DANCING class will continue on Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. Cost is $7 per class or $28 for a four-week session. No partner is needed to take this class.

*Sign up for COMPUTER CLASSES on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 pm.

*REMINDERS:  *SWEET HART BUS — Call 748-2511 for reservations and 830-4399, their direct line, to go home so you don’t have to wait at doctor’s office. Also, Saturday service between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm for weekend appointments or shopping.

*BLOOD PRESSURE checks on second Thursday of each month or the last Wednesday of the month.

*Call the Senior Center or stop for information or reservations for the various trips that are being offered. Come to the center for overnight trip booklets.

*Make a decoupage glass plate at this month’s CRAFT CLASS is on Tuesday, September 26 at 1 pm.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINIC, Tuesday, October 10, 10 am to noon and Tuesday, October 31, 10 am to noon. Sponsored by Danbury Visiting Nurse Association. This fills up fast. APPOINTMENT ONLY; call 270-4310.

*AARP DRIVING CLASS on Monday and Tuesday, October 16 and 17, from 1 to 5 pm. MUST attend both classes. Call for appointment as there is limited space.

*ANNUAL HARVEST BAZAAR, Friday, October 20, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Saturday, October 21, 10 am to 2 pm. Those who would like to help and/or contribute in making items or baking for the bake sale should contact The Senior Center.

OVER NIGHT TRIPS

*MAINE RAIL & SAIL — From September 26 to 28 enjoy a boat cruise on Penobscot Bay, lunch at Schoolhouse Restaurant in Portland; dinner at Rockland Trade Winds, Lobster Capital of Maine; tour Maine Lighthouse Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth building, and after a buffet breakfast, board the Maine Eastern Railroad’s “Lobster Land Train” for a scenic train ride through Wiscasset, Bath, and Brunswick. *A DAY AT THE RACES on Tuesday, September 19, enjoy the excitement of live harness racing, hot and cold buffet lunch, and clubhouse admission in Monticello, N.Y. Depart from center at 9 am. $33 per person.

*OKTOBERFEST at Platzl Brauhaus on Monday, October 18, in Pomona, N.Y. Depart 9 am. $70 per person.

Monday: September 18: Taste of Honey Day: Honey glazed ham, sweet potatoes, sweet peas, whole wheat bread, honeydew melon;

Tuesday: September 19: Butter crumb fish with tartar sauce, baked potato with sour cream, broccoli florets, seedless rye bread, pistachio pudding with whipped topping;

Wednesday: Shrimp & corn chowder, unsalted crackers, turkey grinder with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, carrot and raisin salad, cinnamon apples;

Thurs: Tex-Mex chicken, rice & beans, fiesta corn, corn bread, orange juice, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: September 25: BBQ chicken quarter, creamy macaroni salad, three-bean salad, buttermilk biscuit, orange juice, ice cream cup;

Tuesday: September 26: Virginia ham with pineapple glaze, scalloped potatoes, green peas, seedless rye bread, fruit cocktail.
