More People Should Have
Had A Say In Bus Contract
To the Editor:
It was with disappointment that I read of the School Boardâs decision to award the school bus contract to All-Star and not the owner-operators. It would have been nice if the town could have decided this matter, and not just six people.
I have lived in Newtown for over 42 years, and have had four children ride the buses, with usually the same driver year after year. The children really got to know the driver, and I felt that they were in good hands. Most (if not all) of the owners lived in Newtown, and you knew the buses were well-maintained because they were owned by the driver.
I have no children (nor grandchildren) riding the buses at this time, and as a longtime past member of the Legislative Council I always voted very conservatively with regard to the school budget. However, I would be willing to have my taxes reflect an addition to the budget of $300,000 per year (many think it is $1.5 million per year, but that is over five years). It would mean an additional eight one hundredth of a mill increase or approximately $20 per year on a house valued at $350,000. I think this is definitely worthwhile when it comes to preserving the owner-operated bus system.
Sincerely,
Peggy Baiad
