Keep The Parade Safe
Keep The Parade Safe
(The following open letter to Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe has been received for publication.)
Police Chief Michael Kehoe:
I want to let you know that we immensely enjoyed this yearâs parade and hope that it continues for many years to come.
Having said that and reading The Newtown Bee news account, we must seriously attend to the safety issues raised and address even more that were not directly mentioned.
My family was one block away from the flag, and I felt ill at ease with children â toddlers actually â crossing the roadâs white line to gather candies. In addition I was appalled by the undue exposure to the midget cars and tractors showing off their âskillsâ while at the same time being at armâs length of the crowd.
On numerous occasions my wife had dozens of children get back from crossing the white parking line. (I strongly feel they shouldnât even be in the street at all.) Behind the curb is close enough; you can enjoy the parade just as well. Iâll be more than happy to buy a bag of candy or something from the various vendors around town for my daughter and have us all time to enjoy the parade without distractions.
God forbid that any of our citizens (especially children) get seriously injured or die. The town would go bankrupt from the legal fees let alone the monetary damages that would be awarded by the courts.
Keep the parade... and keep it safe.
