Christopher McCann and Paul Michaud, both of Sandy Hook, were each presented an academic scholarship from Martin D. Schwartz of Trumbull, president and CEO of The Kennedy Center. Each golfer, a 2010 graduate of Newtown High School, received a Junior Golf Scholarship Award during the 19th Annual Kennedy Center Golf Classic held at Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk on June 22.
Aileen Toal has been accepted into Bossov Ballet Theatre, at Maine Central Institute faculty in Pittsfield. The 15-year-old, a daughter of Maya and Victor Toal of Newtown, left for Maine over Labor Day weekend. Aileen has been a ballet student at Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet since 2002 and a principal dancer in NCCBâs the Malenkee Ballet Repertoire Company for the past five years. Her teacher has been Jennifer Johnston, founder of NCCB.
The Bossov year-round residential program is for high-school age students seeking preparation for professional ballet and the Maine Central Institute has an accredited college preparatory curriculum. Because ballet is a two-credit course at the Maine Central Institute, there are no conflicts between ballet and academics as they support and encourage each other. In addition to her academics, Aileen will receive Bossovâs Vaganova-based program six days a week, three and a half hours of class each day and two and a half hours on Saturday, plus rehearsals and performances. The dance curriculum includes ballet technique, pointe, partnering, classic pointe variations, menâs class, character, and acting. The Bossov program is integrated on the campus of Maine Central Institute with its own dormitories and dining facilities.
