NMS Student Council Candidates Gather To Get Involved
Newtown Middle School students interested in participating in the 2010-2011 Student Council gathered after school on Monday, September 15, to learn about becoming involved in the group.
Math teacher Linda Dale Mulholland and language arts teacher Nadia Papalia passed out forms for the candidates to fill out to apply to run for office. Each interested candidate must fill the form out and return it along with two letters of recommendation and an essay on their skills and abilities by September 23. Students who pass the application process for president, vice president, spokesperson, or treasurer will be notified by October 2.
The Student Council president must be an eighth grade student, according to the form, and will be responsible for overseeing the Monday meetings under advisor supervision. The president will also set agendas for the meetings during a short additional meeting each week, will plan and implement service projects and school functions, and will assist advisors with administrative duties.
The vice president of the Student Council, according to the form, will be a seventh grader who will assist the president at meetings, will record attendance at the meetings, will record community service hours preformed by representatives, and will assist the president in other duties.
The spokesperson for the Student Council will be a seventh grade student who will notify the school paper of upcoming Student Council activities, will coordinate Student Council publicity, will record information a the meetings and report back at the next meeting, will maintain written correspondences, and will assist the president and vice president in other duties.
The treasurer will be an eighth grader who will maintain a binder of account balances, will report balance changes at meetings, will submit withdrawal requests to the B-Wing office at the school, and will assist the president and vice president in other duties.
âGrade level assemblies and elections will take place on Friday, October 8,â reads the form. Following the assemblies, students will vote for their chosen candidates, and the elected candidates will be published in The Bee the following week.
